 Same here. I went on a 2 night trip over the weekend and my whole bed was filled. The worst part? I forgot a fucking lighter, or any way to start a fire for that matter. Thank goodness I was with friends.

:anonymous: I don't take lighters... sweedish steel and a little ball of 000 steel wool does the trick perfectly.

and... if ever considering any state park in NJ, just pitch your tent in a Walmart parking lot, it'll be more pleasant.

I'm not that committed! We would do that sort of thing while backpacking, but now it's just lighters and a little lighter fluid to get the fire going. Maybe bust out the propane torch as well :bananadead: <--- me if I'm not careful

Might have been glamping, but at least we got out there! Just me and my wife getting away from the kids for a weekend.

 I have been known to use my little camp stove to start a particularly wet fire.

not taking the lighter started with me just wondering if I could manage without it. now, its just fun to learn from each fire and see all the different ways to get moist tinder to light. we also tend not to bring firewood with us anywhere (unless for some reason we camp in a campground). we like to scrounge stuff up and make do with what we find. both for backpacking and truck camping.

batteries and thin pieces of metal... touch a clump of fine steel wool to the ends of a AA and watch what happens, couple wire baggie ties and the truck battery = poof

I put a bunch of ferro-rod pulls on various bag/pack/jacket zippers... just in case

the wife even test-carried one on a carry-on bag zipper when flying international, they didn't even bat an eye or notice it

Not dissing you tacos, just wondering, what do you aim for when camping? Agreed with jpneely, i'm going out there to get away from things, and I don't need to bring a 6 solar panel array, 5 awnings, shower, car wash, 4 CF oven, desktop computer, 6 burner bbq grill, 900 floodlights and a 6 room camp tent with spiral staircase to a balcony. I basically take a simple tent, cook box, cooler, beers (often not enough) chairs and clothes. I've got my gear to a size where everything fits well in my bed, no huge racks, no excess weight (still too much for these little leafs though) Different strokes for different folks

My goal is to be self sustaining and comfortable out in the woods. So to do that, I'll have my cooler, chairs, a table for cooking, two burner Coleman stove, etc. Either way it doesn't matter, and this thread is getting off topic and turning into a pissing match of who camps with the least stuff because that makes them better in some way.

Pack more than you think you need. When you finish each trip take a look at what you did and didn't use. If you didn't use something for 2-3 trips you can probably stop taking it. Not counting safety stuff of course.
