Uneven Wheel Well Spacing - Tires Not Centered in Wells

    Could some of you check your front wheel well spacing for me? My front tires are not spaced evenly. When I crank my steering wheel to the left I have plenty of tire clearance, but when I turn to the right I get rubbing. So I took my tape measurer out and the difference between the left and right sides is amazing. Is this normal? It seems really odd to me, but I don't know what could be done about it. If a few of you could check your trucks for symmetry, I'd really appreciate it. I don't care about absolute numbers, just the differences. My driver side tire is almost centered in the wheel well while the passenger side tire is nearly an inch closer to the rear of the wheel well opening.

    I'm totally stock with stock tires...and both sides measured 3.5" on front edge and 2.5" on the backside - ultimately 1" back in the wheel wells.

    Since the passenger side & drivers side are not connected (like a solid axle would be). I would assume that one side is actually 'normal' - or else you have more complicated route cause.

    A couple questions for you: How's your truck drive & when did you have an allignment done last? Does your steering wheel 'center itself' after you make a turn? - Test this going in both directions. This has a lot to do with CASTER.

    When you turn RIGHT and it rubs...WHERE does it rub?
    I'm guessing drivers side front maybe and/or passsenger side rear....or both?

    Other than that...no noises or thumps when you drive/hit a bump? Does everything mechanically look good?

    What wheels & tires are you running? What suspension?

    I think it’s likely that the cab is mounted crooked on the frame. There is another similar thread in the 2nd generation section that discusses the bed being off center. My bed is off to one side about 3/4".

    The truck drives straight, no vibrations, pull, rattles, etc. I have the ToyTec C/O's up front. The truck was aligned last week.

    I've thought about the cab not being bolted down straight, but the passenger tire is actually closer to the chassis mounting bracket which is a part of the frame. Even if the cab is mounted crooked a bit it wouldn't help the tire spacing any to straighten it as the frame/cab mounting point wouldn't be moving. It's the suspension components themselves that put the tire too far back.

    Who installed your C/O's? Did you have these installed before or after the allignment?

    Did you just notice this? Or has it been like this since you bought the truck?

    Did you try the *steering wheel* centering trick yet (I mentioned it earlier)?

    A local 4x4 shop did the installation. They are the best shop in town. Alignment was done afterward. I know nothing of this trick you mentioned, but my steering wheel is centered already.

    It has nothing to do with the fender flare. The passeger side is hitting on the body mount, which is a part of the frame. Take a look at the following pictures:

    It's not a *trick*, but somewhat of a test.....

    When you have proper caster - your steering wheel should center itself after a turn without you touching it. Just make a good turn (90 degree for example) and let go of the steering wheel. It should go back to 'straight' by itself (for the most part).

    I guess I'm just having a hard time explaining this....

    Take a drive. Make a turn onto a side street..... After you've made the turn, let go of the steering wheel and see what the truck/steering wheel does.

    Does the steering wheel and the truck straightened itself out by itselft (for the most part).

    This is a test of CASTER allignment.

    Not doubting the allignment....or what's on that paper.

    But perhaps something has come loose, broken, or even perhaps the truck wasn't properly set on the allignment rack. I dunno...just throwing a 'test' out there to check.

    Anything is possible

    Its possible that the missalignment spacers in the lower and upper control arms arnt in the right spot. Point out the problem to them. By pushing the rear of the control arms out a little, and bringing the fronts in, it should move your axel center more twards the front of the vehicle.

    This is what I'm starting to suspect at this point. I'll take it back by the shop and see what they have to say.

    Thats the only way that I know in which to move the wheel forward and back, other than cutting the CA mounts and reattaching them. :)

    How/when could that happen? During the allignment?

    You shouldn't have to mess with any of that for a spacer lift.... and if it did happen during the lift install - how did they allign it with it like that?

    No telling how or when it could have happened. If the shop that did the install removed his CA's they may have put them back incorrectly. Odds are that didnt happen, and it was installed wrong at the factory. It can still be aligned, but the shop should have caught it and fixed the issue.
