There's another option now. Harrop makes an electro magnetic internal not external elocker for the 8.4 (actually that's a 8" gear too, not sure where the misnomer comes from) so no need for compressor, airlines and constant pressure

i would rebuild that one with good parts and see if it happens again. dont buy the cheapest R&P out there. use a solid spacer and you should be good. if you break this one then it might be time to upgrade. ford 9 or a 14bolt, but the 14bolt is huge lol. I think currie makes a bolt in ford 9

I'd go 8.4 no questions asked. Seen nothing but trouble from stock elockers. YMMV.

The 8.4 still has a 8 inch ring gear it just has a stud girdle that increases strength. so not really going to help this

I know a few people that went through several elocker diffs. No issues once they swapped to 8.4 axles. You can disagree and tell me I'm wrong but look at failure rates of elocker diffs to 8.4s and it's an easy decision.

I can point you to a few people that have had issues after solid spacers.

Would be nice to find a way to install the larger(stronger) 2010-14 FJ elocker. Less prone to failures. Toyota part 41110-35D30

What about the axle out of a 3rd gen? Don't they use bigger ring gears?

It is referred to as an 8.2" elocker. Has stronger housing, larger bearings, even uses larger nuts to hold into housing. Came in 2010 up FJs and 4runners with elockers.

You mean the one being recalled for being a leaky POS?

Also good luck finding an entire axle assembly

Isn't it just leaking because they didn't torque the bolts? Could be difficult to find one but it's been out for a couple years now. I'm sure a bunch are crashed somewhere.

Could be that or could be soft studs that stretch or something else who knows... But they also have shitty gearing 3.9 unless you find one from a manual with 4.3 but good luck with that. You might be old and grey when you find one
