But they don't really have an equivalent for a similar price. Also, I'm not saying the 3rd generation axle is the answer. Just throwing it out there as an option over the 8.4

Exactly, I was talking about affordable. Remember you still have to regear those, or th front diff or both. For that much dough I'd go Currie or something else that's tried and true.

Nothing is stronger than stock and nobody is better at setting up these diffs than those Japanese engineers

so most people think to go with the used 8.4 diff and axle housing and put detroit true trac in it? and if s do u no of if i do this of any check engine lights would come on or abs because those connections for the e locker won't be used anymore.. and do i need to upgrade the ring and pinion or they strong enough stock? and do u no if the axle shafts from the 8 inch r the same ones in the 8.4's. thanks!

To the contrary. Lower gears means less contact but equal power applied to a smaller surface so you know what that does. It will help your transmission tho which is the real expensive part
Not kidding but I obviously wasn't lauding the new American made crap. New Tacomas look dope but nowhere near bulletproof anymore

Axle shafts are the same. No CEL and I suspect you don't need to worry about ABS because the locker simply turned the ABS off. But why not Detroit or ARB or harrop locker. True trac is only a LSD so not nearly as capable off-road

Hell naw at $2k for a turd gen axle.

Go big or go home, swap in a full floater e-locker axle from a 80 series land cruiser, 9.5 third member, disc brakes, and 4:10 gears. Gear the front to match.

You should be able to get a complete axle for $600-$1k.

Just look at the build thread
Don't they have an offset diff? Could open up a whole new world of drive line vibrations. Not to mention interference under flex.

They do, the swap has been done. Keep the flanges parallel and use regular u-joint driveshaft and it works. The offset is to the passenger side so no gas tank interference, Maybe exhaust?

If you wanna get real crazy just use the LC axle as a donor axle and get a ruffstuff or diamond housing, build it centered with custom shafts. Cut to length chromos are available.

Pretty sure that's only a mechanical LSD until 2007. Post a pic of the diff you bought and I can tell you for sure
