metal dust in oil?

I recently changed out my oil at 1280 miles. Today I was checking the oil levels as I ran my dip stick across a paper towel I noticed a tiny bit of grey dust on it. The end of the dip stick is a bit rough though.

I changed the oil with Mobil 1 0W20 and used a

$11 FRAM XG9972 (Pack of 1)

FRAM XG9972 filter. ( should have used a Toyota OEM) seems like a few people here use it. 6.2 quarts and the made sure it was filled properly.

I'm right around 1480 miles. Should I be alarmed or is the engine still breaking in? Oil is gold in color.

Normal. If you still had the canister style oil filter you would have not have noticed this.
P.S Fram filters suck.

 

Pretty normal for first oil change so nothing to worry about.

It's possible that was already on dipstick when installed and you're the first person to wipe it off. Either way you're fine...

 

Not so much with the cartridge filters. I've used Frams on all the cartridge filter changes for years without issue on all of my Toyotas and countless family and friends vehicles. I've probably got 200 OCs in the last 10+ years under my belt. Never an issue with the Fram TG filters

 

I just wiped it clean before reinserting it though. Checked multiple times. I always make sure its clean.

So I take it's "normal" for the 1st oil change after the factory fill.

 

I did notice the

$11 FRAM XG9972 (Pack of 1)

FRAM XG9972 uses a plastic topper which adds a tiny bit of height compared to the OEM which was filter media. Does that cause an issue don't know. But Amazon reports good reviews on the 3.5 Siena engine same setup as our 2GRE FKS

 

People have been bagging on Fram canister filters for years....with or without good reasons. But the cartridge filters are a different story. You can actually see the media and the construction of the filter. Absolutely nothing wrong with the Fram cartridge filters.

 

As you can see the plastic top differs from Toyota OEM.

I have watched several reviews of oil filters. I am not buying Fram anytime soon.

Understood. Some people here said to change it out early with Mobil 1 0W20 or whatever they like. So I did at 1280 miles. At 1480 now. I figured most of the dust or particles would be emptied out. I guess theres going to be some left over floating around or its still breaking in?

 

They all differ a bit from brand to brand and even within the same brands. But don't fret over it. I use the TG which has an even thicker top portion. No issues.

Though the 2GR is still a bit of a novelty to the Tacoma world, it been around since '04. Plus Toyota has moved away from canister filter applications on nearly all engines over the past 12+ years.

TOY640 housing wrench and a bag full of drain plug gaskets and people know that. And unless specified or the filter is provided, guess which one I put on it. BTW, I work for beer or cookies.

My wife's Prius as never seen anything but a Fram filter. And if there's a vehicle out there that's tough on oil.....it's a Prius. The gas engine is constantly starting and stopping. Mobil1 0w-20 and Fram TG filter are all she's ever seen over the years. Oil is always clean and not a drop burned.

 

Sweet. Sounds like you have a bit more experience with the XG9972 than I do. Truth be told it was my first filter type other than doing canisters for years. Pretty bizarre experience. I made sure both filters fit into the housing. Seemed like the Toyota filled it width wise a bit more. But the

FRAM XG9972 fit in and was virtually the same height as the Toyota OEM. I thought maybe the plastic top would cause an issue. But your personal testimony says otherwise.

I guess the general consensus is a bit of grey metallic dust is not a big deal at 1400 miles since changing it a few hundred miles ago from the factory fill.

I'll also add....I actually like that the Frams have the plastic end caps. IMO, it tends to hold the media in position. I've seen a few OE filters as well as a couple of Purolator filters with open ends where the media was either twisted or partially collapsed when I pulled them out. I never seen that with any Fram....from the TG on up

 

The first oil change on any new motor is likely to have a silvery sheen from microscopic metal pieces that, no matter how smooth you finish metal, exist. It's why I change oil at 500 miles. Doesn't matter the make, all will exhibit metal sheen as parts mate to each other. Worst one so far was my 2015 FJC, that one even had swarf in the filter left over from casting. Doesn't hurt anything but I damn well wouldn't want some 10 K first oil and filter change either.

 

I'm familiar with the XG line. But for the most part I use the TG line. It's affordable and available just about anywhere.

This is the specific one I use on the Prius. Only applications where the filter housing points downward is there a drain plug requiring a second o-ring....like the 2GR engine. The Prius housing with parallel with the engine...so no housing drain...there for, one o-ring.

 

I also add... not to anyone in particular...just in general for those who may be new to this type of filter.

Don't over tighten the filter housing. There is no gasket. It's the o-ring that does the sealing. Just a gentle snug is all that's required.

And buy the right housing wrench. Don't try and use a regular cap wrench that "almost" fits. Spend $20 on the real thing....a

Over tightening and/or using the wrong wrench are the number 1 reasons for filter housing damage
