The level of incompetence at the dealers is just astounding. They didn't even pull the wheel off to check it out? Any basic automotive knowledge would tell you that does not look right , And like the OP pointed out cars are sitting on the dealership lot and they don't look like that. How frustrating

Should've been an issue noticed at the 5k inspection? Unless it was a recent issue.

    OP

you can pull the wheel off and easily remove the pads to take a look. pads just pull out once
you yank the two small cotter ins, and the two brake pad retention pins....

there is a small cotter pin on each brake pad retention pin that is inboard...
you can pull out with needle nose just yank it off. then work the 2 large pins
outward and the pads lift right out.

    remove_pin_retainer_c087a1a9d7dd4313669de81d9caaaeabf4dc237b.jpg

here is a better angle showing the little clips
but on some roached out calipers LOL

in fact don't pull the pads, just pull off wheel and take a picture from this angle
so we can see it. PLZ OP !!

Wondering if anything more ever came of this? @gwozdz did you ever pull off your wheel yourself and inspect your brake pads?

I get a kick out of all these people bitching about not having rear discs, drums are hard to work on, bla bla bla. I've been driving for 22 years, had about 8 vehicles...
Had rear disc brakes on ONE of them. 99 GMC Sierra... In 150,000 miles the rear calipers seized 4 frigging times. I spent more time screwing with those rear brakes than all the rest of them combined. EZ? Hahahaha

I get a kick out of people who like drum brakes, and I hear the 2019 Tacoma is going to have four wheel drum brakes. There way ahead of the competition. I had a 1975 F250 ford with four wheel drum brakes it was fantastic. Everybody knows drum brakes are far superior to these fancy disc brakes. I'm hoping they go back to carburetors as well.

15 minutes per side...learn to mechanic

Now that I have thought about it, I have had only 1 vehicle out of the last 7 that had 4 wheel disc brakes, 2006 Ford Explorer

    Don't worry guis.

If you had FJ brakes you would have 4 disks AND a set of drums anyway, which are inside the rear disks...so they still get filled with mud, hard to adjust, ect. and you get 4 calipers to get frozen up.

Rear drums are not so bad

Rear Discs do not have to be designed with that internal drum for a parking brake.

Oh no doubt. My point was if Toyota did do it, its very likely that is how they would do it, since they do it on the other SUV with 4 wheel disks

    everyone forgets

the tacoma is a basic, cheap, work or recreational hauler truck. that is the primary focus for toyota.

sure, cheap is relative, it ain't cheap. but drums are fine for what the truck is aimed at, piling mediums loads
or crap into it and using it for work or recreational hauling. and being able to stop. nothing wrong with drums

in fact discs in rear bring a) more cost and b) different problems.

Very Common, Ford does the same thing, I had a 2006 Explorer with this.

Yes , I agree drum brakes are great. So great Toyota is the only company using them. They are way ahead of the competition. I'm hoping the new 2018 wrangler has drum brakes and follows Toyota. I hear the Rubicon will have four wheel drum brakes because they're so much better off road. They work great when wet.

This has nothing to do with drum brakes, his front disk brakes are messed up and was curious if he figured out why.

How about we drop the drum vs disk bullshit? We get it, some of your hate drum brakes. Well get over it as your Tacoma has them and bitching about it won't magically change that

well, they are ahead of the competition, by a long shot.

so if all you have to rag on is drums in a tacoma,
go buy some shitbox with discs, and deal with a hundred unrelated new nagging
issues with numerous other components and systems problems that other shitbox has.
cuz they all have 'em, except toyota. toyota does more right than wrong.

nothing is ever 100% perfect, but toyota is more perfect than the rest of them. people are not fools
and toyota would not be #1 if the story was different
