Would you care to explain what "manual hub in the locked position" means?

Because I kinda wanna know and then I would understand the severity of said situation hahah

this is a manual hub. when locked in they engage the wheels to the axle shafts.

the only thing is less MPG and normal wear on the hubs.... no biggie. if the t case was in 2 wheel then the only difference was that the shafts were locked into the hubs which turned.... no damage unless the t case was engaged in 4 wheel

This is a bit before my time, but I believe it has to do with getting 4x4 engaged. If I understand things correctly, it used to be a two step process. First step is to lock the axles, and second step is to engage the front drive shaft.

Now, its pretty much all done behind the scenes, but the locking is the reason why 4wd doesn't instantly enable at times.

As far as wear goes, I cant image it'd have caused any damage. Probably dropped a few mpg due to a little more friction by having a few parts spinning unnecessarily. If you're really worried, change the diff fluid and see what it looks like. You could also try out your 4wd to see if its making any noises and engaging ok.

It used to be common to keep them locked during winter months just so you dont have to get out of the truck to engage 4wd.

manual hub aka lockouts means you gotta get off your ass and leave the ps3 get your shoes dirty and take your hand and lock the hub/lockout into the lock position.. then you use the old school tried and true (no electronics BS) stick shift to engage the t case.... modern vehicle's are all air/electronic acuated .. POS. way weaker but as ppl started playin the ps2-ps3 and got fat and lazy the stronger manual hubs were replaced with the mall crawler editions.

If I recall, On my 1988 Toyota 4x4: it was reccommened to drive with the hubs locked in for a few miles if they had not been used for awhile. I don't know if it is true for your truck or not.

On my 93, I think there was actually a recommended speed limit on running with the hubs locked, but I may be confusing that with the limit on driving in 4 high. I think it was around 55, and low enough that I knew I didn't want to drive all the way up to the snow line on the way to Tahoe with them locked (that, and it does get crappier mpg than unlocked.) Do you have your manual?

The exact reason for them being speed limited I don't know. Perhaps heat and wear issues because they weren't designed for it. (I mean why would you be ripping along over 55mph in 4wd if conditions were crappy enough to require 4wd?). I can only speculate that exceeding speed regularly could wear them out prematurely or cause damage, but for the short term, I doubt any harm (assuming you have been doing standard maintenance). That stuff is pretty damn stout, and you didn't even have 4wd engaged. Probably just gave them a good lube job.

It was also quite noticeable when they were locked but I was still in 2wd. A bit of a roar/grumble. You didn't notice this? Maybe it is less noticeable on later trucks. Dunno.

Unfortunately, I don't have that truck or its manual anymore, so I can't check it for you.

Do you know how long they were locked, and how fast you have been going?
