Wouldn't it be great if Toyota listened to its customers and made updates to programming available like dcz108. Keep up the good work man.

Cool, Mom moved out there some years ago to retire, so we get to visit every year or so, we love the desert SW. I can't wait to drive through the Santa Fe forest enroute to the ski basin, I think the SSP will really shine then.

I ordered mine at lunch on Friday and Received it Monday. I always hate ordering stuff and getting a tracking number only to find that no activity occurs until the next or 3 days later. I was stoked to find out it would be delivered on Monday. Install was a breeze, about 10 minutes. Most of that time was figuring out where to zip tie the OBDII cable where it wouldn't get chafed by stamped sheet metal. I've just got it tucked into panel gaps now but will zip tie it securely later on.

Upon driving I immediately noticed a huge, and positive improvement to the shift points. There is a short but steep hill on my way to work that causes my truck to hunt gears, about 2-3 times back and forth usually. With the SSP it held the gear beautifully. Driving around town is great, after making a tight turn, the trans no longer needs to downshift to accelerate. I tried mode 1 and prefer the 6th gear shift point rather than on mode 2. On my way to work I was on the highway in the rain at 68mph and wish it would have kicked to 6th. In mode 1 it will do that but the lower gears shifted too soon for my taste. Maybe in a future product the OP will add bluetooth connectivity to allow us to customize the shift points, I'd buy that in a heartbeat! I'm definitely going to enjoy what I have now and hope that when I get new wheels/tires and lift it will continue to please me. I'm definitely more happy with my Tacoma with the SSP than without, I'd definitely recommend trying one out if you're a 3rd gen owner.

    Re: Custom shift points

If at any point you don't like the current gear selected you can override the SSP by moving the gear selector up or down. I honestly don't see why people have issue with moving one lever up or down. I have the SSPro installed for a while now and am waiting for Toyota to let my Recalled truck off for good behavior so I can install the V2 chip. With the new chip and the ability to manually override the gears I don't see why you would need any more tweaks to shift points by DCZ. I actually don't see the need for this new chip anyway but I ordered it since it was only $12.

I too didn't like the 6th gear shift point but when I don't like where it is it's as easy as it can possibly be to bump the gear selector up once to put it in 6th ( so long as the stock programming allows).

The SSP doesn't do anything other than automate what you can do manually in S+ mode. Throttle maps and engine load directed shift points are still directed by the ECU.

Every time you override SSP by shifting yourself, SSP is turned off and has to be reengaged by shifting to D and back to S. That is a good enough reason for wanting more map options.

ECT seems to also change throttle response slightly, not just shift map. Not 100% sure on this though.

Yes ECT changes shift maps and maybe more importantly throttle map.

Still I don't see how moving the selector to D then back to S is considered too worrisome to require more shift maps. If vehicle speed is under 65mph SSP re-engages and you still on your way.

Just installed my SSP and went for a test drive. I'm not a fan.

Seems to be a less aggressive version of ECT

My biggest complaint is that every single time it shifts...the dash screen pops up the (current gear screen) that's going to drive me crazy. I probably won't ever use it.

That can be changed in the settings so it only shows the gear in the lower left corner.

You can do it yourself. Can't remember where but it is in the manual.

Someone posted somewhere on this thread how to change to not see huge gear number on combi screen at every shift. Simple change on your touch screen. Took a few seconds.

Got the V2 chip on Monday, really fast shipping, thanks! Installed it last night. Real simple (I have mine installed in the console) under the worthless charger. I can't imagine why anyone gripes about this device. If you need any more functionality, call Toyota! Oh that's right they are the one that gave us the crappy shift pattern to begin with. I've already gone through this with Toyota and they said it is "normal". Before I bought the SSP I was ready to drive the truck through the showroom window and walk away. Now I really like the truck because it drives so nice. I guess some folks will have an issue with everything. It just doesn't seem fair because this device does exactly what the manufacturer says it does, the price is fair, and if Toyota gave a crap about us they would build this functionality into the truck! OK, I'm done venting. Thank you DCZ for the SSP!

This is right in the instruction booklet that comes with the SSP. They even suggest to turn it off as part of the instructions. Instructions to do this have also been posted in this very thread by the OP...it is post #1513
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...-for-gen3-tacoma.490113/page-76#post-15543644.

Once the setting is changed the gear then appears in the lower left corner.

    Already taken care of

Thanks guys! That was so annoying. Still don't think it does much for shifting though. Holds 3rd and 4th gear longer. Havent seen it Shift into 5th or 6th yet but i only got up to 50 mph. I'm guessing they may have eliminated 5th and 6th? I'll be on the highway in the morning for a full test. If it helps with the hunt and pecking of the gears it'll be worth it

Need to think of it as another arrow in the quiver.

It’s not going to solve every driving condition IMHO. But it totally has its place.

I drove to Tahoe recently and I went from D to ECT to SSP to shifting myself and on my three hour drive or so I got really comfortable with what “mode” was best for what driving condition.

I do find SSP shines in city driving particularly.

I have yet to get V2 but I will soon.

I bought my 2017 in July, and broke my shoulder two weeks later, so the SSP that I ordered didn't get in until today. Like others, I cannot overstate how much better it is. I drove up to Algdones on I-25 a very hilly route toward Santa Fe, and the continual gear hunting was gone, rational shifting is the rule now, and it was a much more pleasant drive with the SSP. I have version 1 and will order that chip, since I may tow in the future.
