I actually went a slightly different route when I did this mod. Instead or using an actual 12 volt port or a dedicated USB port, I went with a cig lighter with a lighted ring. Then I plugged a dual USB insert into that. This gives me the options of both USBs or a conventional 12v charging source if need be.

The socket is powered off an existing 12v charging port inside the center console. I tied the lighted ring into the parking lamp circuit...so it only works when the lights are on. Handy at night.

I chucked the lighter insert onto the garbage.

I may get around to doing this same mod to the backseat area of the Taco at some point.

I installed this right in the back of the center console for my backseat passengers: https://www.amazon.com/BlueFire-Charger-Socket-Outlet-Voltmeter/dp/B01F3I117E/
It has a 5A circuit (inline fuse) powered by a relay in my breakout fuse box (engine compartment) that kicks on if the "INJ" circuit has power, which is tied to the ignition being on.
This relay is on a 10A fuse and also powers a 12v3A converter (on a separate 5A circuit/inline fuse) that sits in my headliner and powers my dashcam that I have hooked to the gopro mount.

I just finished this work this weekend but can document / take pictures / brainstorm if desired.

I nearly went with that. But in the end I wanted the versatility of having both the USB ports and a conventional 12v port. My youngest daughter's Nintendo DS uses the regular port. She can just pull out the USB insert when she needs to use it.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but after some searching and not finding an answer this seemed like a good place to start - given the knowledge of the folks that have posted here.

Does anyone know if there is a difference between the 12v socket in the dash vs the socket in the center console - AMP-wise? My phone tells me whether it is "Charging Slowly" "Charging" or "Charging Rapidly". I have a 12v to USB adapter that I use in my car, and the other day I noticed that I was "Charging Slowly" with the adapter plugged into the center console socket. I moved the adapter to the front socket and got "Charging"... I tested back and forth and got the same results. so it SEEMS like the center console puts out fewer amps than the front socket - even though they are both labeled 12VDC/120 Watts.

Before I spend more time on this, or try a different adapter..... do any of you think this makes sense?

    Thanks!

Makes sence in how you describe it, but when I had mine apart the other day I was sure they are wired in parallel, so the exact same wiring harness runs to both of them. That's going by memory, and it wasn't something I was really paying much attention to.

Thanks @mutely It could very well be a quirk of the Anker adapter I have.

Those 12v cig adapters are really prone to losing power through bad fitment and dirt/junk in the socket. I'd try cleaning the female part with windex first, then rotating the charger in the socket while looking at the status of your phone before replacing it.

Post #54 just above describes powering a dashcam using the mirror power as a source.

Another yes you can. I use my mirror power for my radar detector and the center console outlet for my dash cam.
