6 speed manual trans, i might go with 4.56, if i get to much revv, ill will get 35s to help with the higher rpm.

I do too. There's always Mexican overdrive for downhill freeways

The guy who made the post is manual trans. His gear ratios are different and he won't see the good results like you have. 4.56 is too much for 33s (unless you don't care about screaming on the highway)

Overdrive gear on manuals is smaller than auto as is hence the worse freeway mileage

all the 4.0 are 3.73 gears. only the 2.7L are 4.10. when it comes to the 4x4. 2wd is another question.

i have bfg ko and 285/75r16 with 4.10 gears. it does good off road and on road. the one road performance is not as good as stock. imo. you need to find where you spend most of your driving and set it up for that. hence highway or off road. or spend the money on a dual t-case setup.
good luck finding a 4.3 for the front.
    i have a 4.3 for the 8.0 e-locker rear

What gearing for a 4.0 auto turning 35s? I run 3000+rpm at 75ish. I want to get that down to about 2000 rpm

Stock gearing should put you there.

Bebop is your Speedo recalibrated for you tire size? Are you actually in 5 gear when going down the road?

You wont get it that low with any gears that fit the 8" 3rd. General consensus is that 4.88s are the most favorable for your setup though.

I am running 285's now and eventually would go with 35's and debating if I should go with 4.56 now or 4.88 since my intent is to rock some 35's. It probably will not happen for some time but stock gearing now is horrible. 3.73 is bad. I tend to drive in 4th gear and not 5th if you wonder about highway driving. I am sure 4.56 would be just fine but 4.88 is screaming my name

AT or MT? On 35s 4.88 for AT, 4.56 for MT.

its an AT. That was what I had gathered from reading up on it. What I am wondering is how bad the 4.88 would be on my 285's until I add the 35's my current tires are less than a year old so no immediate plans to change. Need other stuff before I get 35's

I'm running 4.56 with a manual transmission, and 33's. I would not want any higher gearing (4.10 or 4.30). Yes, my engine is running around 2800 at 70, but the 4.0 needs to turn faster with the heavier tires. That is where just looking at the gearing numbers falls short. The Tacoma is pretty under powered as it is. Just regearing to overall stock numbers will not bring back stock performance.

I ran 285/70/17 10-plys (summer) and 285/75/16 10-plys (winter) on stock 3.73 in my double cab auto v6 for about 3 years. At first it didn't bother me and if course the gas mileage was God awful. Recently I got lucky enough to get hooked up with a 4.10 third member for trade on my 3.73 and I couldn't be happier with my 4.10. Went from 2000 rpm at 70 up to about 2300-2350 rpm at 70. Take off is like night and day. My gas mileage actually increased by about 3-4 mpg both city and highway. My opinion, 4.10 is perfect for 285 tires. Others opinions are different and that's ok, that's just my personal experience. I hope this can help you in your decision.

can someone with 4.56 gears and a manual trans 4.0 liter on 285/70/17 tell me rpm at 80 mph. also with your speedo re calibrated correctly. im on the fence of getting 4.10 gears or 4.56 i do a bit of highway driving and stock gearing and stock tires had me under 3k rpm at 80mph.
