Interesting thread.

For the record, I am not a tree hugger, I eat meat for dinner at least 4 times a week, I drive a car, heat my home and use lots of electricity- because petroleum, I discard lots of plastics and other packaging that will be around a lot longer than me, etc, etc and so forth.

I am no expert on any aspect of this, but I like to read. In my opinion- electric cars will replace ICE and hybrid models in 20 years - not because of environmental reasons or running out of oil.

Because I believe they will be simpler to build, work better with autonomous technology, and hence safer and more efficient, and given the choice, many people will prefer to do other things while being driven.

Will they be more expensive than ICE vehicles? An Apple mac in 1984 cost about $3.5k, and had 128MB of ram. Today I can buy a smart phone for less than $100 that is, let's just say "better". Electric car prices should also become less than ICE car prices, for the same reason.

The AI operating systems are the heart of the autonomous electric car, not the steel and plastic. A few will make the software and license it to others for a fee. Bill Gates built Microsoft because he realized the money was in software, not hardware while IBM was clinging to PC manufacturing. In the 80's at the start of the personal computer revolution, lots of mom and pop shops building PC's from off the shelf parts. I see something similar happening with cars- small companies like Bollinger with unique offerings.

Whatever happens, we all have front row seats.

Cars will never replace horses, computers will never catch on, internet is just for geeks, electric cars will never replace gas and automation will never get rid of jobs.

When did I say electric cars will never replace gas cars? I said TODAY it is only happening because government is mandating those changes. And I said that it takes less time to fill a tank of gas than to change a battery or charge one. Both of those things are true. You guys can sit there and speculate about the future all you want. If you were serious about those endeavors you would put your money in stocks to prove how much you believe in the future of said technologies.

 

At no point did I say either of those. My wife bought a car that she liked that just happened to be a hybrid. Her driving style is not indicative what the Prius' can really do. There are hyper-milers who average 60 mpg with them with peak numbers in the 70's.

And I see you're one of those people who still throws that tired old rhetoric around about the "dreaded evil battery pack" that plagues every Prius ever made. Forget what you read on the net. Those stories aren't the norm. For starters, Toyota warranties the traction battery for 8yrs/100k miles. Secondly, go to PriusChat and read all the stories on Prius with 200k, 300k+ miles still running strong on the original traction battery. Better yet....have you ever been to Chicago? Half the cab fleet is Prius and Camry hybrids....but mostly Prius. Do you think cab companies would invest in something that was costly and high maintenance?

Your comparison was a little slanted. Because of your assumption that the Prius would definitely have to have a battey pack sometime in those 250k miles you added $2k to the cost of ownership. What if I did the same comparison except I added $4k to the Elantra because I was certain it would need a transmission in that time period? Would that sound fair and accurate?

Better yet, with your apparent ability to predict the future....perhaps you should be sitting at home picking lottery numbers rather than lathering praise on that unicorn Elantra you drive.

 

In seattle the majority of taxis are Priuses as well for your standard cab.

 

I do in fact have stock in Tesla and other companies looking towards the future rather than the best but thanks for the advice.

 

Well I put maintenance and repairs at a wash because the Prius too could possibly need a transmission in that same amount of time. I could compare the Corolla to the Prius and make the same points. I am not here comparing reliability of different companies. I am here comparing the cost of ownership and use of regular vehicles to hybrid vehicles. It is not a stretch to assume 1 new battery in 250,000 miles. And I put the cost of that battery in the middle of the pack for cost. The range is anywhere between $1400 - $3000. I put it in the low-middle area respectively. That is NOT a cost a regular vehicle would have.

You're looking for scapegoats because I just proved your Prius isn't as cost effective as people like you want to claim. I don't care if you buy the car. Waste your money however you want. Just don't preach to people about it saving money on gas lol. It doesn't make sense financially.

What the fuck are you talking about? Scapegoats? I couldn't give a flying ass whether the Prius is cost effective or how much gas it does or does not use or whether she's saving the planet. It's the wife's car. She bought it....not me. In fact, I was a little uneasy about the idea to begin with. That said...over the years I've come to appreciate it for what it is. It's reliable, nimble, easy to drive, nicely equipped and can absolutely donkey-stomp the shit out of nearly every comparably sized car out there in terms of efficiency without even trying....which is just a bonus. Neither of us put that high on the priority list and it did not influence the purchase. All that for $2k more than a comparably equipped Civic or Corolla. You're the one trying to turn this into something it isn't. In fact, if you go back and read my original post you'd see that I was not saying any of the things you've claimed I said.

I merely said my wife bought one because she liked it, that she wasn't a tree hugger and wanted a reliable vehicle. I guess you'll dispute those facts too.
