So what is your guys favorite brand of weld through primer? I HAD a can of SEM copper weldthru that i got to use probably less than an ounce of. Went to use it today and the can is fubar'd for some reason (wont spray) even though i followed the directions last use (held upside down for a few seconds). So figured i see what you guys use! Ill most likely end up using whatever is at the local weld supply but least if you say something is bad and thats all they have i can skip out on it.

You shouldn't weld through regular primer or paint since they just burn and will cause porosity in the weld.

What he's asking about is a favorite weld-thru primer which is specifically for doing this. It's useful since it does cut down on rust, for example overlapping joints and seams where it would be impossible to prime and paint after joining.

I don't have a lot of experience with the stuff but I figured the typical ones were all the same, basically some combination of zinc, aluminum and/or copper that reflows when you heat it up. I'd guess SEM, 3M, Bloxide, Eastwood, etc. are interchangeable. I've used 3m 5917 and it worked but the nozzle clogged on it, too.

Haha that’s awesome! Thank you. I ended up ordering two text books from an online used book seller. Paid about 15 bucks for two old copies. Super sciencey

Yup. Ill just see whatever they have and go with it. And that's exactly what I need it for...areas I cant paint after welding.

That's where I got mine. Price was fair and you aren't renting a bottle which is nice.

I use SEM but get in brush on form. I like to coat all the stiffeners when replacing rusted floor pans or putting in rust out sections on car restorations.

I'd look on Craigslist and just exchange it at a local shop that's not Airgas (I don't know if they're all like my local one, but Airgas will only swap their own cylinders). I got an empty 125cf oxygen tank from a garage sale and swapped it for a same size argon. For price comparison, I bought a 80cf 75/25 tank from my local shop for $215 + $32 to fill, which is within a few dollars to what Cyberweld is asking.

Didn't know they made it in brush form. ill have to look for that for next time.

And this is what Im needing it for (this time at least)...rear sill for a FJ40. Its really a pretty crappy design by Toyota and pretty much every factory rear sill is rusted. The rear bed basically sits (barly) on the larger piece then the cover piece goes over it and "sandwiches" the bed to the main part. But it all attaches pretty much via plug welds so cant really use regular primer. I do plan to use a seam sealer or something and not leave the pieces open like they were from Toyota. Toyota just did the plug welds then painted over it.

As interesting as reading your posts and having to put in my own punctuation.

    Bwahahaha!

Just kidding around Craig. Bored as he'll right now. Was hoping for some welding projects from peeps following this thread.

    I'll behave now.

Questions for the veterans. Found some 3/16 steel plate about 40 min from me for $100, but it is diamond plate. Any reason I shouldn't use this to build bumpers? I don't really want the diamond plate, so I'd flip it inside out, so to speak, and keep the exterior smooth.

Its just going to be a little bit heavier than regular plate, right?

I can barely manage to make close enough cuts with my angle grinder, so that will just add more fun. :anonymous:

If it's not too heavy for your application, use it.
