not sure how many of you guys are affected by the Taurus recall, but the class action site is going to start taking claims on Monday for repair/replacements.

This is probably worse than asking what is the best 3" lift in the suspension forum (my area of "expertise"), but is there a good all around gun for traveling through wilderness out here in the southwest? AR's seem like the way to go - considering I don't eat meat (when I did I ate every game animal in the north east there was and delicious fast food) and there's a lot of room to take long shots for target practice what are some recommendations? If you're wondering why I want a gun you can use your imagination :) I'll often be on my own out in the middle of nowhere. Grandfather was a serviceman and had me shooting a pellet rifle and practicing gun safety since I was 6 or 7 - I'm just not familiar with guns since I haven't owned one in about that many years. Thank you.

What are your intentions for the gun? You say just wandering through the woods then mention room to shoot.

If your just looking for something for protection and plinking fun a pistol can do just that. You wont be hitting long shots but with the right caliber youll be able to take down pretty much anything you need to in a defensive situation.

If you want a long gun an AR isn't a bad choice. Cheap, accurate, and can modify it pretty much however you want. Other options though...a levergun. Or just go with a good bolt gun.

This is pretty much what I have heard lurking around the ar bs and other forums. I appreciate the advice.

I'm not sure what model I have they are over 4 years old though, and I love them. I think they are just the regular fiber optic ones. Serve me just fine on my daily carry.

    probably a dumb question...

you guys with bipods on you're scoped long rifles..... do you remove your bipod everytime you have to put your gun away in a case?

Depends on the gun for me. Bolt actions...generally yes I do. Mostly just cause they don't fit in the case. Quite often I have to take the bolt out too. (just basic plano cases for to and from the ranges). The AR's...usually I don't. They fit in my 42" double gun bag with bipods on so no need to. I do have the bipod I use with my AR's on a QD mount so sometimes I do for some weird reason.

No. Do some cases not fit bipods? I suppose some don't. I buy Midway deluxe cases for my hunting rifles and they are wide enough for a Harris to fit fine. My AR cases are rectangular and plenty wide and deep for a bipod.

A lot of the cheaper ones aren't going to fit a bipod without some work.
Soft case youll have no issue. hard case just depends how thick it is. The ones I use most are just cheap plano ones (like 15 bucks each?) and pretty narrow. I have thicker ones that will fit a bipod just fine in them. I just don't use those ones much for some reason

    Marlin you say?

Maybe I just need to get used to it. I do like the reliability of the gun though. Far better than I would expect a Taurus to be
