Not enough to have a build thread.
They're so new I really haven't seen one in person. And I haven't don't any research on them either. but they have definitely captured my neighbors and my attention. Like 30 mpg, huge towing capacity (for a lil Colorado). The big thing that deters me from modern diesels is their volatility. Diesels are getting hit with all these (somewhat) new smog laws and the engineers seem to be learning through trial and error (the error that the consumer has to pay for) how to meet these smog requirements and make this new smog equipment work. It's like buying a car back in the 80s when egr first came out and engines were blowing up left and right.

    Take this timeline for example:
2003 - The 7.3 stops productions. The 7.3 was considered bulletproof except for the transmission, but a proper rebuild with good aftermarket parts could make them much better. The 7.3 had no smog requirements (unless you consider glow plugs a smog requirement, and in some cases, they were).

2003 - 2007 - The infamous 6.0. These had so many problems - injectors, turbo, egr cooler, oil cooler, fan clutch, head gaskets, egr valve, fuel injector control module. 99% of these problems were emissions related. The good news: Change your oil and the bottom end is very reliable. Occasional lifter bearing failure. And there's aftermarket parts that can make the truck reliable.

2008-2010 - the 6.4. Much lesser known because not many people bought them after the 6.0 catastrophe. Even large fleet companies said fuck that, well let some other sucker test them out for us. But nonetheless, the new exhaust filter system causes the oil to dilute with fuel and causes the mains to wipe out or sucks this mix back into the intake through the breather and starts bending rods. I had one motor that made noise that I classified as piston knock. Not skirt slap, and not rod knock. The rod was bent just enough for the piston to contact the crank weights at BDC. Still has a plethora of other issues - 75-80% emission related.

2011 - Ford realizes the sex with International is terrible, gets out of bed with them, plays with themselves, and produces their first (to the best of my knowledge) Ford Diesel - the 6.7. Typical Ford trial/error. To the best of my knowledge, something was designed or manufactured wrong with the valves in the early ones and they couldnt hold up to the heat of an emissions process called regen. So we started replacing long blocks. The ones that didn't get replaced under warranty, well, I'm sure you can imagine that Ford told the customers, "it lasted 100k/ 5 years, you're problem now. That'll be $16k, cash or credit?" On top ofthat there's also quite a few other issues that I could list, but crappy motor manufacturing is my biggest issue.

And i hope you don't read into this and think I'm a smog/ emissions control hater. I'm not a scientist and cannot confirm or deny climate change, but I can imagine how many cars are on the road across the world and imagine a negative impact on the environment. It's like shitting in a swimming pool. It's not going to contaminate the pool immediately (unless its... Uh.... Wet) but eventually it will contaminate the pool, especially if you repeatedly shit in it day after day. So i do believe emissions control is necessary, i just hate when big companies don't perform proper R&D or purposely create failure points for the sake of profit.

Yep. SEAL Team 18 was my last Command. Reserve Command. All Reserve SEALS and SWCCs go to SEAL Team 17 (Coronado) or SEAL Team 18 (Little Creek). Special Boat Teams are run by SEAL officers. There are no SWCC officers.

@FirstTimeFirstGen man we think alot alike in regards to that topic! I wouldnt be surprised to find out you have wrenched on old hotrods etc....i'm no mechanic- but i've built a couple of roadsters and a gasser! I am not a fan of egr/emmision controls etc. Its like the mechanical version of beauracracy

I’m stoked. I’m also about to get a promotion to a different and more challenging department. I’ve been in water quality for 9 or so years so it’s time for a change.

Should get more field work too. In fact my new supervisor just spent 5 days in the emigrant wilderness restocking snow survey cabins. Bummed I missed it this year but hopefully not next year!

I thought you were hiding from promotions because you didn't want to leave Sonora? Do you get to stay with this new promo?

Yeah that is another reason for switching departments. Someone retired recently so it opened up locally.

    Happy Friday!

Fun fact: Doughnut holes are not in fact removed from middle part of a regular doughnut. They're just make to look like they are.

I don't know which version of my rant you read as I edited it like 3-4 times, but i tried to make it clear, I'm not against emission control, I'm against bad R&D and from what i see on a daily basis, Ford has decided to pass that cost and burden onto it's customers, which is unacceptable IMO. Emissions can be controlled without making the engine volatile and with commuting DD vehicles, i think it needs to be, hence the shitting in the pool reference. Now toys and strictly offroad vehicles, i could give a shit less about as there are a lot less of those than commuters and therefore impact the environment less.

    ...too much shit to list.

That's actually one of my interview questions when I interview people.
I tell them that the question is to invoke creative thinking and the only answer that isn't acceptable is "I don't know." Its sad when some people still say "I don't know."
