    I think a lot of teams didn't want to dump their backup and the Leafs jumped on an offer to put him in the AHL before anyone else had a chance to think that idea through.

    Pickard gives Toronto a trusted backup should anything with Andersen go wrong. He can get some games in the AHL now without any waivers for the Leafs and get game ready. He's also young and cheap. It's hard not to like this idea.

    Two funny twists.

    The player the Leafs traded for Pickard is one of the leftovers the Leafs took in the Phaneuf deal. So add that into the equation and this deal looks even sweeter.

    Second, Pickard let it know he really wanted to be on a contender. Neither the Avs or Knights will do anything this year, but the Leafs might.
