Is it worth it? Buyback?

I have a 1995.5 Tacoma sr5 extended cab v6 5 speed with 165,000 miles; body lift, fabtech 2.5 inch lift in front, 3 inch alcan springs in the rear, and sliders welded to the frame. I absolutely love the truck!!! I haven't had the rust inspection done on the frame yet. I am sure that it is in need of some repair or replacement...I don't know what they consider bad enough to do the buy-back...or do they give you a choice???

Also have sliders welded to the frame...Do they care???

Anyways according to Kelly BB the truck is worth $5,845. I have heard that they let you add the value of any mods that are on the truck...is that true? Does that include my tires, wheels, lift, sliders, audio equipment etc?

Bottom line is looking to start a family soon, and the tacoma is well not very family friendly. I have succumb to the fact that in the next 2-3 years I am going to have to buy a family friendly vehicle, but it has to be a truck (04' Tundra 4 door?).

To me the truck is worth more than $6000.
So my question to you is:
    1. Do I have the truck inspected? and If they say that they will buy it back do I take the offer?
    2. Has anyone had them buy back a similar year vehicle with similar mods...if so what did you get for it???

    Thanks in advance

If it was me and they offered a buyback I would accept it and buy a new truck. They pay you 150% of its value.

What are the limitations on the buyback? Is the truck too old?

Buyback is 1.5x the KBB excellent retail value. Never heard of them adding in cost of mods.

Oh, and if you take it in and it fails, they wont give you your keys back, and they'll get you a rental for...30 i think...days.

    Wrong. Not always the case.

Mine failed and i drove it away while waiting for the call. Think i drove it for about 2 weeks before bringing it in for the sign off and check.

Had the replacement ready to pick up later teh same day.

The buy back is 95-2000 with some exceptions reported on 01's and even some 02's, though the 01's to 04's are more typically (almost always, i believe) targeted for the frame replacement due to the frames for those vehicles still being available.

mods actually hurt you, not help you. i had a heavily modded wrx and i would get right around kbb if that. you would lose it all unless you sell privately

I'm not sure about the rest of your mods, but I do know you get more for aftermarket tires. I had a 97 with BFG AT's on it and they termed it oversize tires. They were only 31's. I received 10,500 for mine

Our frames tend to rot. If they do, Toyota will either buy back your truck for 1.5x the KBB excellent retail value (95.5-00) or replace the frame and some other crap (01-04.)

Salt really wasn't the issue, it was the crappy steel that was used on the frames.

    not exactly.

Dana never coated the inside bits of the frame, Toyota never caught it. Thats why it rusts from the inside out, and what might LOOK like a perfect frame could become dangerous real quick.

They go through a very technical process when determining if the frame is rotted or solid.

    Hit it with a hammer.

Not totally true...they tryed that with me and I said "NO". I said I have stuff in the truck I need to get out and not to mention I need time to think about what I am going to do. They tryed to pressure me into leaving it there and take the rental, but again I said NO. When you get down to it, it is still my truck, it is still titled to me and they can not keep the keys legally, that would be theft (keeping my keys) and would be auto theft if they would not let me take my truck. They can tell you it is not saft to drive and have you sign something saying you've been told so they are released from liablity, but they can not refuse to let you leave with your truck.

Does'nt mean they wont try and pressure you though.
