I feel like an idiot, re: Speaker locations in 2010 Access Cab

The window sticker states that my vehicle should have 6 speakers, two tweeters and two speakers are in the front door panels. The window sticker indicates the other two are mounted in the ceiling, but I'm thinking they either were forgotten during the assembly, or I am completely blind (not to mention deaf as I don't hear them).

Anyone have a picture of where these are supposed to be?

you cant see them at all. Make sure your deck is not faded to the front, it must be in the middle at 0. I dont think they are all that loud, if I recall there a set of 2.5 or 3 inchers. paper coned like the rest of the speakers. I have no clue where they are located, I did some tapping and banging on my ceiling in the rear to try and locate them so I could upgrade but had no luck. I'm pretty sure I would have had to take down the whole headliner to switch them out so I decided to just cut out the rear channel during my stereo install.

 

do you know how to access them to switch them out? if you have to remove the headliner im over it...

 

Wow... horrible move by Toyota to have them under the headliner. This is the first complaint I have on my new Tacoma then!

 

I agree. They should've left them in the rear doors. I have seen some people make their own custom spots for rear speakers. Toyota even left the mounting holes there, they just didn't wire or put any speakers back there. As someone above me said, the speakers in the roof are computer speakers, only 2-3 inches big. If you turn the fade to all rear, the sound sucks!

 

They do ok with mid bass, for a truck. Man does the radio suck asshole. I got the 6 cd changer that came with it. That shit can barely hold a station. Is there like an antenna that I need to install? srs. lol

 

this is what you do if your trying to achieve surround sound in your truck. its not very hard either, you just need to run the speaker wire from your amp or deck into the rear doors, cut out a hole the right size for the speaker of your choice, and screw the badboy's in. a cover grille over the speaker/screws will make it look better. I did not do this because they would be blocked by my speaker box which would make it pointless, and no one ever sits in the back so I dont even need em. my set of 4 way 6x9's in the front door and silk 2 inch tweeters in the stock door location tickles my ears, like when a siren passes right next to you.

 

The ceiling speakers apparently are a kind that use the panel they are attached to (the headliner) as the sound radiator. If you want to 'replace' them with standard type speakers, it would probably be better to put them in the rear doors.

 

The ceiling speakers are pathetic. Since I couldn't hear them anyway I was gonna just power them with the HU while using a 4 channel amp to power the doors and subwoofer. Good plan until discovering that the PXA-H100 sound processor will only work if front and rear speakers use either all line outputs or all speaker outputs from the HU. Now I have to add a mini-amp to the ceiling speakers.
I may make a custom enclosure to mount rear speakers where HAL was romoved. What a PITA and more unplanned expense.

 

Well I got in my trunk today at lunch and played with the sound settings to move all the balance/fade to the rear and could not hear anything, so either I don't have the ceiling speakers, or I did not wire them correctly when I replaced the HU.

Are all of the access cabs equiped with the ceiling speakers?

 

Chances are you did not wire it correctly. Trust me though, you're not missing anything.

To check and see if they are working, place your hand on the headliner and see if you feel any vibrations are anything when you turn the volume up.

 

+1^ I went with 6 1/2's all the way around (separates in front of course) and ran them straight to the amp.

There was a thread a while back on fabricating speaker grills for the AC rear doors. I think the username was MR. Bass. It was very clean and it wasn't too difficult to do with the pics and instructions that he provided. If I find the link again, I will post it.

 

they arn't like real speakers...heres how they work.

The NXT tech differs from traditional conical speakers in that it uses a light, flat diaphragm to disburse sound frequencies over the entire panel surface as opposed to producing vibrations that ripple from the center outwards.

The FJ cruiser has had them in the ceiling the whole time. Tacoma access cab's have them in 09+ models.

 

Wouldn't they still be designated as "rears" while balancing etc? I put my balance to 100% to the rear and couldn't hear a thing, I'm thinking maybe I crossed my wires while soldering them together. I'm going to take it out and check on it tonight or tomorrow night.

 

yes, fade all the way to the rear and you'll hear that and the subwoofer if you have it.

 

so you couldnt put like a pair of 6 1/2s instead of those?

 

I believe (could be wrong though) that they are connected to the headliner, and i'm not sure it could support the weight of 6.5's, not mentioning how shallow they would have to be.

 

anyone ever take their headliner out?

 

not that i've seen, im hesitant to mess with mine because thats where the curtain airbags/wiring etc is located.
