I test drove both (not a pro, but late model 2nd gens). After comparing both, I bought a new 3rd gen (2017). It's interesting reading all of the complaints against the 3rd gen engines - I really didn't notice any difference in the power or shifting between them when I test drove both back to back.

Looks the same to me. There was a rework of the dash and the console looks a bit bulkier I was referencing the dash layout as being the same all of the dash controls are in the same position.

You really think these look the same? It's okay if you do. I don't think they are even close.

I'm really interested in this interior debate. The 3rd gen dash has a more modern design, I'm having a hard time telling the difference, and that's after driving the current gen corolla Toyota interiors all look the same imo.

I'll give you this. The steering wheels are the same. After that they are not even close.

If you rip of the panels, the dash would look the same.

    Here's what's different.

    Vents
    Head unit
    Cluster
    Hvac unit
    Shifter
    Cup holders
    Glove box
    Dash panels
    Center console

    Here's what's the same.

    Steering wheel

So to you point. Remove the interior and they'll be closer.

Are the dash boards interchangeable between 2nd and 3rd gen?

The cab itself dose not look any different to me, I can't say for sure they are the same, I've never worked on the production line.

Still looks the same to me.

Just because parts are interchangeable doesn't mean they look the same. The mounts might be the same but that doesn't matter. What's visible matters.

If you think they look the same so be it. I wish you luck in life and suggest you visit an optometrist prior to driving next time. :p

    The HCVA controls haven't moved

    The head unit hasn't moved

    The gage cluster hasn't moved

    The vents haven't moved.

That's what I'm saying when I say the dash layout looks the same.

If you drove a 2nd gen and a 3rd gen both equipped with electric motors, and the same cab wheel base configuration. I doubt if anyone could tell the difference.

Oh okay. So you actually saying any left drive vehicle is basically the same. Why didn't you say that in ther first place. Of course the head unit will be in the middle. The gauges on the left. Etc.

Who looks at the dash while driving lol

The dash has the same layout with a facelift.

Now I'm quoting my own post.

Ergonomics that's the word I was looking for.

If you're considering the 2nd gen pro I'd take a brand new Frontier Pro-4x for a drive too.

Here you go then. Same basic thing. 4 wheels that touch the ground, headlights that point forward, glass over the openings.

The interior of the updated 2nd gen is only a few years old but feels more like a decade with all that chunky fake silver trim. Even the current 4runner looks super dated with that mid 2010 fake silver and chunky styling going on.
