Self explanatory. You've told us in the past how you wiped it down with scotch brite and oil, now scotch brite and scillicone. The scotch brite opens up the steel. Now you've unctroduced chemicals that can soak into the steel scillicone being especially more difficult to remove and clean for painting.

The only difference in the color of the scotch brite pads is how course it is. That has no bearing on what it will remove from the surface. The only saving grace is you had said before, I believe, You had wiped it down with oil before you started using the scillicone. Doesn't make any difference though as you said you had no intention of painting

I used WD 40 prior to the silicone spray but that left the cage greasy and collected dirt making it not look clean . When I used the WD40 I soaked the scotchbrite pad with it then scuffed down the entire cage

This time I scuffed the entire cage down using a blue scotchbrite pad which is 1000 grit . then with a clean towel wiped the cage down then another towel with silicone applied to it then wiped the cage down again

The cage once I applied the silicone spray has a much drier appearance not attracting dust or dirt such as the WD40 did

I learned this trick using silicone spray from a friend who runs dirt track cars

He sent me this link were other options is Pledge furniture polish and linseed oil

Back when I worked in a factory with metal dust a welding smoke in the air I used silicone spray to keep my toolbox clean. Nothing worse than putting your hand on your box and coming away with a black hand:rolleyes:
