What’s up guys. I have a slight issue that’s not really a big deal to most, but it concerns me a little. The other day I was sitting in my truck which is a 96 tacoma 3.4 4wd and I hit the throttle out of gear and I noticed a hesitation before it actually revved up. It drives great though and pulls great. I was thinking it may be rooted from an issue that when I’m trying to start the truck, before it’s running it’ll skip a little while it’s trhing to start. I replaced the plugs and wires about a year and a half ago. It’s got about 200k on the dash. Like I said, it drives great with really no issues. Is this something I should concern myself with? I thought about maybe cleaning out my MAF sensor to start? Anybody with any experience would be appreciated.

    Dear IrmoRabbidMoose,

I am sorry to hear about your revving issue on your Tacoma. This is what I would do. The first thing I would do is hook the Tacoma up to a OBD computer, and check to see if the engine is throwing any codes. This will always help diagnose your engine much faster than randomly throwing parts and labor at the problem. The problem is what to do if the OBD computer does not come up with any codes. Your spark plug wires and spark plugs are obviously not the problem since you just replaced those parts a year ago. Cleaning out your MAF sensor is good place to start. The next thing I would do is clean out the Throttle Body and the Idle Air Control Valve.

    Good Luck,
    Paul

If I remember this is the first year for drive by wire

Which opens up interesting problems compared to the cable style

Lubricating the throttle body can`t hurt

Not having the specs close at hand I don`t want to guess

I notice on my 03 that when I floor it there is a hesitation, almost like it is taking a deep breath, before the get up and go. I’m pretty sure the drive by wire is the reason for this

Are we talking about an 03 like his info or a 96 like in the OP? If it actually is a 96 check the throttle cable, though it doesn't sound like it may cause what you're experiencing.

Yeah it’s weird what it does. It’ll rev to about 1k rpm but then hesitate then rev to about where I put the throttle to.

My bad I missed it was a 96 either I was not awake yet or long day.

Make sure to check that the firewall is not broke where the throttle cable attaches

No, it’s idling around 7-750 like normal. I’ll have to check that with the firewall when I get it back on Thursday.
