That still requires them to find the sequence of numbers required for activation, that generally requires being in the proximity of the key when the code is sent. Generally way beyond the average thief. Also, strange that Toyota was not included in the manufactures that have been cracked, possibly because they use different logic that uses a 2 part authorization.

We have had 5 used cars stolen (really dumb after the 1st 2) We kept our keys in lock boxes on the windows. They found they could easily break the window to steal the lock box, take it to another location to cut it open, come back and take the car. This was all within the last 3 weeks. They would joyride until the gas was empty and ditch the car without any damage other than the window, hope that is the case here.

To gain the master key for KeeLoq requires snooping one successful transaction, then new fob keys can be generated at will. The algorithm has been completely broken. In the case of cars with a push button start and keyless entry that doesn't require you to actually push a button the car is constantly polling for the fob so a man-in-the-middle can trick the system without you ever doing anything except leaving the fob within range of the hacker. It's not something your average meth head is going to do but the hardware to do this is just a laptop, a SDR and an antenna. Well within the capability of someone who knows what they're doing. If the truck still uses a mechanical key (either dumb or smart) in the ignition then it's a little tougher, but not impossible. To my knowledge the Toyota immobilizer won't help you since hacking the RF side looks like a completely valid transaction to the system.

This has always been true. In my old truck I had a removable steering wheel and a couple of less visible deterrents, but it wouldn't be immune from a tow truck. My feeling is it's about making it difficult, no thief is going to bother with a Toyota that's atypically difficult since there's a dozen more in the neighborhood that won't take that extra 5 minutes.

Locksmiths are pretty much required to have computer skills these days for the current security and access systems in place. And they change daily, the technology is growing in rapid leaps. I myself am very much behind in the current technology, I mainly do hardware and low volt wiring. And think about retiring.

Stands to reason that modern day thieves need to keep up if they want the good stuff.

Time to leave it unlocked with a M18 Claymore under the driver seat. It will be the last time they steal anything.

Special request for anyone who has a SC on their 4.0 and lives in the Denver area...Mind if I come by, or meet up so I can listen to your SC. I hear a strange sound coming out of my SC and I could swear its never made this sound before (its less then a year old), and want to check to see if others SC makes the same noise...anyone? Anyone? Thanks in advance....

Since I heard we might have a hard freeze tonight.... and we spent a couple of pages this spring dealing with busted backflow preventers.

When you blow out your sprinklers and drain the pipe/backflow, leave the ball valves at 45 degrees (half open).
Leaving them either all the way shut or all the way open can trap water which can freeze and split the brass. If this happens, we'll all have to spend another page or two in the spring discussing YOUR broken backflow preventer.

Only took one ruined valve to motivate me to make mine removable.

It only took two times to remember to get all the water out of it before you store it in the garage... with the ball valves opened.

First place I've ever lived that had sprinkers... seems I'm a slow learner.
