It sure seems that way sometimes, especially some of the gear ratio choices.

- Reverse higher sped than first? What special interest group wanted that exactly?

- 2nd gear is a bit too much of a leap from 1st with this engine, especially in low speed stuff like parking lots. I know, I know, just rev it more.

- 6th could actually be taller for highway mpg. Then 5th would actually be more useful.

Oh and lets not forget the mushy throttle...

Just my .02, but the ECM tune (OrangeVirus) is making our trucks way more enjoyable to drive!

Edit: Oh and for those who aren't aware, these trucks (3rd and I believe 2nd gens) have a hydraulic accumulator just before the slave cylinder on the side of the tranny. My understanding is that it acts like a shock absorber, so it could be adding to this slowness in cold weather.

 

Not sure that I've seen a factory option for the 3.5l in our trucks. I've seen somewhere where folks have had success changing the clutch fluid to a motorcraft equivalent... I'll have to do some digging on that too.

I don't see -20 here in VA, but anything under freezing and my clutch travel is super sluggish.

Anybody else with a 3rd gen have a squeaky / creeky clutch pedal only when the inside of the truck is hot?

So on a hot day, when I get in my truck, the clutch pedal would be very annoying. Creaking and squeaking and a lot of feedback from it in the pedal. I took it to the Toyota dealership, not sure how many hot days are going to be left this year, and the tech looked at it for 45 min, brought it back, and said he couldnt hear or feel anything out of the clutch pedal.

Now, I know my truck, and on cold days no issues, hot days, constant noise out of it. After he tells me this I dont believe him, go to test myself, squeak is gone. Hasn't been back even when its hot out... so my question is, did the tech actually fix something? And if so, why not tell me what he did instead of saying he just didn't feel the issue? My only guess is he blew some lube over it and moved on. Thoughts?

Still loving the hell out of my taco and enjoy every moment driving it.

 

2nd gens clutch pedal does the same on hot and humid days. Mine always does it in the summer.

 

My clutch pedal has been creaking when slipping in first gear sporadically in all temps.

 

Yes, get the OEM one if you can. It was $54 for me. Toyota part number ...

Use Disc Brake Grease on all the Pivot Points of the Clutch Pedal and it will get rid of the Creaking noise, I did this on my 2008, 2015, and 2017 and worked on all 3 Trucks.

 

Do your clutch and brake pedals feel loose? For some reason it feels like I can move them more than what you should?

Basically, it feels like my pedals are loose. Is there a way to tighten the pedals?

 

Has anybody installed a tuner on there MT ?! Any feed back would be great !!

 

Not a tuner, but I have Orange Virus 1.02b tune loaded in my 6mt truck. Updating to the newest division today as soon as the file comes through.

 

Can you expand on that? What's it like?

 

It even it's early development(much more improvements to come) has literally changed my mind on selling and buy a new 4runner pro. These trucks stock are about the worse behaving vehicle I've owned, and I'm a person who buys and sells quite frequently. I've owned now 26 vehicles (none junk) and I gave this 17 Tacoma a try and after putting almost 7k miles on it I went ahead and listed it for sale, then read the Ovtuning thread start to finish and pulled the trigger on his tune. Needless to say it's no longer for sale and it has no problems pulling hard on the 34s I have on it. If you are still driving a stock tune truck...stop, do yourself a huge favor even if you need a freaking personal loan to pay the 800 dollars for it, just pull the trigger. I don't know how to post a video but I rolled on the throttle fairly aggressive in 1st from a stop and it was spinning slightly then hit 2nd and it wants to get sideways and it was no where close to doing that before the tune. I can imagine how quick these trucks could be on stock tires being the 34s aren't the lightest.

 

Sounds good, but before I invest in a tune I would like to repair my fender. Anybody know if this is repairable or worth fixing, or should I try to find a replacement fender? Got dinged by a senior citizen.

 

Looks like you needed a lot of zoom to get into that. I say, don't even bother!

 

Damn, I could easily see the damage from about 50 feet away. I was dropping off a load at the UPS store when I saw this older man park right next to me. I immediately got a bad feeling but ignored myself.

 

Thanks for the info I have been reading the many posts on his thread. What I'm really interested in is the throttle response. Is it more linear after the tune? I have a manual truck as well thankfully.

It's definitely more linear now, an it's actually close to 1 to 1. You touch the pedal slightly the rpms increase slightly, you touch the pedal a lot the rpms increase a lot lol.

 

How is pedal responsiveness? Nothing gets my goat like stabbing the throttle for a rev match, and I get no engine response except a lazy slow rev well after I requested it.

 

Exactly ,, half to put pedal halfway to the floor ,, it thinks about it and then decides ok time to go lol thank you @17TRDOR thats just the info I was looking for !! I’ve recently gone to the 4.88 gears and I think with those and this I’ll get the response I’m looking for ! The gears themselves have made a huge diff especially going up in tire size adding some weight and liking to tow a little ,, thanks for your input ,, I’ve sent the ov vendor a message for purchase ,,
