    Alright tw, got a question for y'all. My buddy has a 2012 pre runner that is labeled a trd off road. He paid the premium for the off road package but from everything I can tell, it's just a sr5 with trd off road stickers. All he has on the dash is the traction control switch. There's not an external locker actuator on the diff. He bought it from a jeep dealer not Toyota but he has spent some time in the phone with Toyota and they tell him that there was an option in 2012 to have the regular e locker or the internal electromagnetic locker which is activated by holding the trac control button for several extra seconds. I'm calling bullshit but before I really run my mouth could those of you with newer model 2nd gens please drop some knowledge. Am I wrong that if it's a trd off road that it would have to have a separate switch for the locker?

    Sounds like an sr5 should have skid plates, atrac, locker, different seat pattern (higher bolsters) most trds have hitches too

    Just because someone put trd stickers on it doesnt mean anything.

    Run the vin and see what options the truck originally came with. I doubt someone would remove it AND the switch in the dash.... Sounds like your buddy didn't do his research completely... Unfortunately.


    Also, i do believe the locker was an option for trd models.

    Certainly sounds like an sr5 to me. The seats should be different as well and I have never heard of this electromagnetic locker you speak of. Your friend needs to go get some money back

    He still hasn't run the vin, he's lazy. I agree that it should have the atrac, skid plates, etc. I haven had a chance to really look at his truck yet but I'm about 99.9% sure he got ripped off.

    I'm telling him he got ripped off. The 3rd gens, I believe, have this electro magnetic internally mounted locker. But only the third gens. This is just from what I've read this a.m. I still thought they had the externally mounted worm drive locker but I guess not.

    Mall landscaping pin stripes.
    I've been kicking around going this route, I have a Sony midrange 2.1 soundbar in the man cave and it sounds really good. I've sampled some of the higher end ones and they sound amazing. The wireless sub is a nice feature too.

    He didn't know what he was buying I don't think. Yesterday was the first time that I saw it but never looked it over. It has trd off road bed decals and chrome grill surround and chrome rear bumper. I didn't think anything of it until he got stuck (pre runner problems). I told him to turn his locker on and he held his Trac control button on the dash.... I was like wtf? He said that's how I turn the locker on.... I couldn't believe it. The heep dealer sold it to him as a trd off road and he never questioned it. Ugh...

    One of my fender stickers says Desert Edition, the other is Tidewater Tacomas... does that mean half my truck was built on the east coast, and half here in AZ??????

    He needs to call Toyota and run the vin. Then look at his sales paperwork, if it says they sold him a TRD Off-Road model and it's only an SR5, then they are in trouble. He can either make them take it back or work out a new, cheaper, price. If the paperwork matches the vin but not what the sales guys said, then he can complain and go to social media, etc, but not much else will happen.
