It was fun. Small turn out but sand hollow is always fun.

Tires are good. Already had to replace one from a branch in the sidewall but was covered under warranty and only cost me 40 bucks. No complaints but they are loud on the road and took a lot of weight to balance. Doesn't matter to me though since I hardly drive the truck on the street unless I'm going to the trail.

I was driving the T4R around today, and this 14 Bolt just fell onto the trailer...

    IMG_1969.jpg

Turns out I lucked out and it happened to be an 05 2500HD axle with Factory Disc Brakes, 4.10's and a locker. Freshly pulled from its donor this morning.

I couldn't pass it up, 1/2 the price of the wrecking yards and it came with calipers and rotors.

1997 t4r has super duty axles, 5.13s locked front and rear. 3 link front with 14" kings. Rear 63s.
I wish 14 bolts had the metric pattern

Yeah, when I convert the SD 60 it's going to cost a few pennies.

Same I axle I got. Came with factory disk brakes as well...just a few years older than yours.

Didn't have issues matching the wheel bolt patterns since my front D60 is older and it has the 8 6.5 bolt pattern.

Wonder if they make hubs to convert the 14 to metric

I'd say they are more valuable converted to 8 on 6.5, and it would be easier to find a spare tire on the trail.

If you wanted to convert the rear it would probably be easier to have a machine shop redrill the hubs and rotors to 8 170

These axles are the ones to get for the 99% of people that want rear discs but also want a parking brake. OEM drum in disc setup. Aftermarket solutions (eldorado calipers) suck.

Do you know what locker is in it?

There's probably enough meat on the hub to redrill them, downside is you also have to drill the rotors which are a wear item. I'm pretty sure the super 60 is wider, so easiest solution is to run an adapter spacer on the rear.

Pretty sure a Gov-Bomb. I'm hoping I can get $75 for the locker and 4.10's then I need to source an open carrier so I can run a Detroit or a Grizzly locker. I have a Grizzly in my other 14 Bolt, and it has taken a beating and still works flawless.

It's a good choice. The locker is unfortunately a gov-bomb. I doubt it's even worth selling.

The newer ones are. After American Axle Manufacturing picked up the 14 Bolt design it became the "AAM 1050". All the bolts and wheel studs are metric.

I ended up converting the 14B 14mm wheel studs to match the 9/16"s on the Ford D60. I shared the specs/info here (WY_Taco on Pirate)
    http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/gene...ont-wheel-stud-conversion-2.html#post21967481

Easiest way you can tell if it's a new 14B is the ribs on the diff.

    When I bought it

It's great that it has the disk brakes and e brake standard.

Unfortunately there's less aftermarket support for the newer design. Also, you're stuck with mounting the calipers towards the front. Which means you have to bring the horizontal link separation in quite a bit to clear the large caliper housing.

Mostly concerned with the lug pattern being metric

I got flack for going with 2.0' Dom with .5" wall but worth it.

links bending back isn't the issue it's the sharp lava rock in this area taking chunks of the softer material off that would doom them.

I wouldn't think that's an issue. I've seen rigs here in AZ with aluminum links with missing chunks and deep grooves everywhere. Yea, they look like crap but are straight as an arrow and keep going no matter what. From what I've seen I think they are worth expense.

No one in this area has them so i can't say for sure how they would hold up but i know that the lava rock is abusive on my steel Dom so i'm sure it would be that much worse on the softer metal.

I think they are popular on the southwest because the the type of terrain here. Many people have them in spite the cost.

For somebody with links front/rear - depending on length - it can easily set your wallet back at least a couple grand if you want to upgrade the steering linkage to aluminum links as well. It's insanely expensive.

I’ve learned that nothing is really a “problem” until it’s streaming out.

Owning a swapped Tacoma with duals and a 7.3 Powerstroke must make me a glutton for punishment
