Anyone wanna teach 'Immobilizer 101'? I have no idea what that is. Anti-theft device?

Yep antitheft. That red blinking car with the key on your dash (below the stereo) is the engine immobilizer icon. Your keys are chipped and the immobilizer reads the chip the ensure the key entered is valid. If it is, it let's you start up. Otherwise no go.

Problem is if the immobilizer computer malfunctions or your key is damaged (and there's a whole bunch of things that can damage a chipped key) then you may be stranded. I for one would love to see a mod whereby one could install a hidden kill switch under the dash that would bypass/override the immobilizer in the event of such a failure.

Been doing some research on this tonight. Seems modding the immobilizer with a hidden kill switch might be damn near impossible. Bummer. Ah well if I get stranded 20 miles out, I'll just eat the dog.

it could be you didnt unlock the car so your starter might still be disabled so your car wont start
hit the unlock button on your remote a few times and then start

If the battery has a dead cell, it will not start. I had an '07 Rav4 in which a single cell in the battery went dead. Drove it to work, jumped in the car after work, and the thing wouldn't start. Jumped it, started right up. But when I shut it off after running for 30 minutes, wouldn't start. Had it towed to the dealer and found the battery was bad. R&Red the battery and it started right up. This happened after owning the car for about 11 months.

My 08 has done this maybe 5 times now, the last time was friday, it always happens after making a stop and then driving a short distance then stopping again.
Friday I stopped for gas then ran about 2 blocks down the road and stopped at the Subway for a sandwich, came out and after 4 second crank no go, waited several seconds then tried again with same results, pulled the key and flipped it over and then after 2 more tries it fired up.

When it happened the first time I called the dealer and of course they said if they couldn't replicate the problem, they wouldn't be able to fix it.

I hope Toyota doesn't expect me to replicate my signature on a Toyota document for my next purchase.

I guess after being spoiled for 30 years of driving dependable Toyota's, I kinda came to expect that when I turn the key my truck should start.

I can only pray that this type of malfunction doesn't happen to me. Its one thing to have problems but its entirely different when there doesn't seem to be any type of alternative to avoiding it.

    just a couple comfort items.
If its a immobilizer problem it will turn over but wont start, I could be wrong about that. OP said it wont even click when turning the key. I think this is going to be something like the key switch or a fuse/relay thing. Do the second gens have fuseable links anywhere? I have not seen one yet. Curious to see what it was.

I agree with imobilizer, had it happen to me, check the glove box..Is there a relay in there. My local dealership installed the immobilizer on my truck left the original starter relay in my glove box. After a few occasions I threw the immoblizer in the trash!

Did you recently add a new key fob...apartment, work, ect? It could be interfering with you truck key if it's too close.

Holy chit, I've done a lot already!!
Maybe this is Toyotas way of fixing the gas pedal issue? If it won't start then the pedal can't stick!! :burnrubber:

I always feel like laughter is the best medicine. Truthfully I am sorry to the OP and I hope you get it resolved soon. I am very curious to see what the problem is.

kulitxplod, So sorry for your trouble. I would be very upset too.

Please do inform us when you receive an answer from the dealer. I am very interested.

I take it that you have made no electrical mods to the truck? No fogs on anytime?

Good luck on a fix - dying to find out what this is. I've never had an issue, but I like to avoid such trouble before it leaves me stranded. That sucks! Mayhaps my remote start/alarm was a good idea after all.
