I wanted manual so bad but for my situation I needed a DC (kids coming soon). I know they are out there but with a crunch on time I had to settle for auto because searching in my area it was slim to none or 2wd..... All in all MANUAL FTMFW

In second gen tacos the automatic trans gets better gas mileage and is more reliable (you can shift gears manually also) and turd gen seems to be the other way around. If you use your truck as a truck there's no fucking reason to get a stick shift

There is plenty of reason to have a manual 4x4 truck.

I have one so I know. Too hard to do all the shit you shouldn't be doing while driving especially in traffic

One of the main reasons to buy a Tacoma is to get the manual transmission!!!

That's not even what I mean. Using my phone while driving stick is real easy. I was talking about rolling cigarettes, eating or changing shoes

The 6 speed in the second gen has many faults. Unless you are an absolute manual die hard I can't say I would recommend it. The throw out bearing design is absolutely retarded and so is the pivot of the clutch pedal. It is only a matter of time when the tob starts to sing the song of its people and it will drive you nuts. When that time comes your only option is to drop the trans and replace with the urd sleeve kit or hydro option. Your looking at 200-500 bucks in parts alone.

That being said I did the sleeve kit and short throw shifter from urd and it has helped it a lot and I would not trade it for an auto, no way! But I have a fetish for manuals and so does my wife and we only have manuals in our vehicles. But a normal person would probably not enjoy the 6 speed in the 2nd gen tacoma, it's flaws are too huge.

Too many to list, and I've probably forgotten a bunch.
The 6MT in the 2nd gens comes across to me as sort of noisy, unrefined, and with some questionable engineering/design choices. It has a decent amount of low-end rattle/neutral rattle, and the rev hang makes it sometimes a PITA to work with (seems to depend on what you're doing, where you are in the warmup cycle of the motor, and whatever other 'logic' engineers put in the PCM).

That said, I wouldn't trade the 6MT in my truck for the auto (had an auto 2nd gen previously). I just spent a week on a really steep ranch in NorCal, with marginal roads and lots of hairpins through dry creekbeds. Ain't nothing better than putting it in 1 low and letting it go - the damn truck climbs shit like a goat with 'roid rage and basically drives herself. Even better downhill, virtually no need to touch the brakes. Toss in A-TRAC or turn on the RR locker and it's even better (though A-TRAC can be stupid at times). On that same ranch, my '12 with the V6+Auto did not behave nearly as well.

In the flat spots, I could speed along at a whopping 5-7 MPH in 2 low!!

I drive a 2003 Matrix, stick. Last 2 cars were Camrys, stick. Finally got a 2008 Taco, 4l, 6 speed stick. I wake up in the middle of the night and go for a short drive. Instant hardon.
The truck was used, a bit dented, 170k km, but I love it.
Next ones going to be a dc off road manual, hopefully used so I can go play.

Thank you and yes I am :)

That's awesome, I wish my experience went that way hahaha. You still have Yours? Mileage? My issues started at 29k with the squeaky pivot and around 40k with the TOB.

Maybe I'm spoiled cuz I swear to god the 5 speed in my old Honda is the most buttery smooth and fun to drive transmission I've ever used. Going from it or my wifes subaru to the truck can be quite jarring sometimes.
