How much safer though? Safer by a factor of 2? because it seems they cost at least 2x more.

The safety latch is not rated to take nearly as much load. So its a weak point in the system.

With good winching habits a hook should be fine. Im going to stick to a hook unless I get a screaming deal on a thimble. But dont bring up cost around here, these parts are ruthless.

Factor 55 can be sucked up to fairlead and out of the way.
I bought my hook before they really was making the 55, so that's why I have it, stronger than your usual hook that comes with winch lines and don't trust them.

D rings, have bent the pins on them also.

    The latch isn't rated.

Then can it be considered a closed system? Id think no.

In general no as in a D ring. Latch is to help by not coming off. As Nick had happen .1% shit can happen.

Still, I trust what I have and it's strength, and plenty has been happy that I had it.

I'd be fine with a loop that is cast steel like our winch hooks and shackles. Something that a shackle could attach to, like the Factor 55, but around $50. One that would snug up to the fairlead.

I currently have my hook attached to the factory loop and the cable is vulnerable. It's steel though and it would be more of an issue with a synthetic line. When I get around to installing the synthetic line shittybilt, that's been sitting in the garage for about a year, I'll get a Factor 55 to snug it up so the line isn't exposed.

The shittybilt thimble looks fine, but I don't want to be the guinea pig. I've already been one with the back of the truck.

When I first got a winch, I had it setup like that going to the recovery point. Smashed the hook on a rock on one of the first trails and the latch never closed right again. Now I've got a F55 flatlink, which gets out of the way, don't have obviously broken pieces, and I just don't worry about.

Trying find closest access point to try hike down to my property to see if anything is salvageable, still hanging onto a thread of hope that maybe my moto and f250 were somehow spared.... also had a Honda 3k and 2k gennies that because of where they were might be ok. Really just fooling myself as likely a moonscape but I need to see with my own eyes...

I only had photos at first. Becomes surreal in person. Get a paper mask if you can, the dust/ash will gag you. Local hardware stores started making sifting trays with hardware cloth a wood. Get some or make some. Don't move big stuff (appliances) it can affect your claim.

Not enough to have a build thread.
I know the loss of those things will hurt, but you made it out alive. Keep that in your focus. In your situation, it's perfectly acceptable to be stressed, disappointed, devastated, and even depressed. But try to keep the fact that you escaped with your life in your focus. Everything else is replaceable. And you have people on here who care and are willing to help

On a side note, Yelp is a fuckin racket for small businesses. They've been hounding me on the phone to become a sponsored advertiser. They show your ads to a specific and targeted audience, remove competitors ads from your page, and make sure you come up tops in their search results.

But here's the racket... EVERYTIME someone clicks on my ad I'd have to pay $4.97 per click o_O. I kindly told them there is no fucking way.

Moral of the story, you guys should start clicking all my competitors ads

Yep, I've never had to deal with being on that side of it, but fuck Yelp. Heard lots of stories about them basically extorting businesses for more favorable ratings. Liked placing bad reviews at the top and forcing the business to pay to "feature" the positive reviews at the top instead.
