what kind of cage... like a half height bed rack? like what I have?

 

no. Because my tent hangs 7" past the end of my bed, I need a cage that is level with the cab back window, or 17" above the bedsides.

 

I really like the look of the one Dissent Offroad just put out. It also looks to work with a softopper. I am thinking of going that route.

 

i thought that guy wasnt responding to emails, so his rep was getting hurt..

I do like his design too

I am not sure, there was a different company that had a group buy going that seemed to have some folks with their pitchforks out that looked nice.

I might try to make a canvas inside for my cage. Not a softopper though.

 

I picked up a Voodoo Low rack on the cheap and am going to see about modifying with a hard material of some sort.

I have a buddy with. Machine shop so hopefully anything is possible.

IIRC, the top of these racks doesn't come to the end of the bed, only the legs reach back. If I've got that right....

Enclose the inside of the rack with a canvas/duck cloth / wood / metal. Across the rear have it flip up like a regular cap window/door. From the bed rail down have a separate set of doors that swing open, like a set of barn doors. The bottom of these doors would close up to a bottom cross rail that is sealed to the floor to keep it water tight.

End result - you open the tailgate. You have an open area you can toss little stuff into.
Maybe a foot (or 1/2 foot) into the bed the enclosure starts. To get inside you flip up the top, then open the barn doors. Probably want to have pull out drawers in there or at least a slide - going to be a PIA to get inside such a low cap.

Anyway, my first thought to your rear doors issue.

 

It would look great on your truck. Add some KC halogens: Marty Mcfly style. You could probably get him to go down on the price quite a bit.

Yeah...I wouldn't pay more than $300 for it. Maybe you can bargan with him and trade him something of yours that you dont need. As far as unnecessairy things go, its pretty sweet. Not sure how it would look without lights tho.
