Well, in my opinion, it's all about the sipes. Tires primarily designed to be superior in winter conditions have an excessive amount of sipes. Since 2000 I've had a reg cab Dodge 1500, a quad cab Dodge diesel 2500, a quad cab Tundra V8, a 4Runner Trail (and now a Tacoma). I believe that if you live in an area that gets snow you should have a 4WD, so yes, all of these were. I ran a lot of different tires in all those years. The list is long. The best were the Dura Tracs. My only guess is because they had deep tread groves and the blocks had two zig zag sipes each, and were spaced farter apart than all the other AT tires I ran before them. I'm a firm believer too that the type of snow is the most important factor when it comes to traction in the snow. Our snow tends to be wet, slushy, little pellets, and we also see a lot of sleet, and freezing rain. My BFGs would load up so bad they turned into slicks. My driveways are asphalt and steep.

Before deciding on the Ridge Grapplers I read as many reviews as possible. Because they are so new there aren't many of them for snow, and barely any at all for my neck of the woods. At the same time, there are countless positive reviews for BFGs in the snow.......but we know my opinion on those.

So I am keeping the faith, and hoping for the best. They have a unique tread pattern and the depth of the grooves are like the Dura Tracs. They are exceptionally quiet so I hope that all translates to a competent snow tire even though they only have the single sipe in the tread blocks.

We've been exceptionally lucky for a couple years and I have a feeling we are due so we will see.

The difference between the MPGs I was getting with the 4Runner and what I am getting with the Tacoma could be so many things. But one thing that is the same is my driving habits.

The weight of the two vehicles, 4,445 lbs Tacoma, and 4,750 lbs 4Runner, combined with the 3.5 vs the 4.0 engines, plus gearing could be the difference.

The contact patch is greater with the Ridge Grapplers than the Dura Tracs but I'm running higher psi's in these than I ran with those.

So when I say maybe it's because it's an E range vs a C range I'm just adding that to the guesswork.

I can tell you this, as the Dura Tracs wore down my mpg's started to go up. But only up to almost 17.

And, I was running them on the Tundra I had, in C range too, and the mpg's in that was nearly identical to the 4Runner.

Yes, I did read some positive snow reviews for these tires. Not hundreds like I would like to have, but enough to convince me to give them a try. I want them to provide the safety I require while commuting. If they don't I'll replace them.

Anyone know if the weight posted on Nitto's site for the new load C Ridge Grapplers 265/70/17 is a typo? They have them down as being slightly heavier than the same tire in a load E (54.67 lbs vs 54.66). That does not make any sense... If they are lighter I will be buying some otherwise I may have to take another road....

Yea, definitely not like the pic in your signature, that's for sure. And it was all down hill. From our place up in the woods to the beach. Now granted, there are some hills, and even the Bay Bridge to cross, but I basically kept the speed under 80 and the tach around or under 2 grand the whole time. Because of traffic I could only average 60 mph, based on the distance traveled checked every hour.

well after several emails to nitto, inquiring about the c-load 265/70/17 ridge grapplers, and not one response back from them, i guess im not going to buy there tires, if they cant take the time to answer a question or two, i dont want anything to do with them..

Just call them like I did. During their working hours, of course. I got through to a very nice, informative rep. Maybe their email server is experiencing issues. You can tell them that too.

If that’s the logic, e-mail the next tire company and see if they respond in a quicker time.

Call them like Rob did. I can’t imagine the number of kids and people that e-mail them asking dumb questions or good questions. Over and over and over if someone doesn’t respond within 24 hours. Just ask VIN at scs!

I am confused as heck now. :goingcrazy:

Why not call DTD and ask them if they are getting that C in the 265/70 you wanted? Or why not get the 285/70 in the C if you have the lift to accommodate it?
I thought all along all you wanted was the C ? Why now are you going to "settle" for the E just because it is cheaper?
    :smack:

    Man am I confused :der:
