Installed new hood with "hood-scoop". Installed Predator Side Steps. Replaced front chrome grill with customized color matched (Desert Sand Mica) grill with added TOYOTA lettering (also in matched color), installed and secured tailgate anti-theft devices. Also installed a new external TPMS monitor for all 4 tires.

Yea, those lugs appear to be from Gorilla Lug Nuts with lock key. I have those on my wheels but have never had any problems with broken lugs before (and don't plan on having any either).

Could be that at some point they were "excessively over-tighten lug nuts"....or :notsure:

Also this is where using basic "torquing down lug nuts" on your wheels is of importance and "in correct order" regardless of what type of lug nuts you use.

But overall if one is destine to break....it's going to.

Mine happened to be cross threaded by the shop i brought it to when I had the tires rotated and aligned.

Rode around on 5 lugs for about a year. NBD

I broke a wheel stud once, many years ago, that taught me the importance of proper torque. Now they always get installed with a torque wrench and anti-seize. Never had one freeze up on me since.

Discount tire had to over tighten it, I always take it there for my free rotation and balance. Took it today and couldn’t get it out so I tried it and snapped. Bet they knew it was about to happened..

    Damn!

This is why anytime after getting new tires, rotation, flat changed, etc. the first thing I do is drive straight home and "torque the nut lugs" in the proper "sequence order" and with the correct torque value on each nut lug so that at least I know that it is done the right way, more like piece of mind.

Yes you can ask them to torque them down and they say they do but I really don't believe them. Not only that they don't follow the proper sequence order as well, when doing so (that is if they do torque them at all).

Yeah those are either installed wrong or the designer did them wrong.

I know exactly what you mean. This is why I carry a click type torque wrench specifically for this purpose cause well you never know if you might just encounter having a flat tire, blow out, etc. and when changing the tire, the nut lugs get torque down in proper sequence.

If in doubt check your Tacoma's Owner's Manual for proper sequence and torque value setting. Believe me the information is in there.

The following information is from my 2008 Owner's Manual:

    2008 TACOMA —Reinstalling wheel nuts:

Before putting on wheels, remove any
    corrosion on the mounting surfaces
with a wire brush or such. Installation
    of wheels without good metal−to−metal
contact at the mounting surface can
cause wheel nuts to loosen and
eventually cause a wheel to come off
    while driving.

    9. Reinstall all the wheel nuts finger
    tight.
Reinstall the wheel nuts (tapered end
inward) and tighten them as much as
you can by hand. Press back on the
tire back and see if you can tighten
    them more.

    CAUTION
Never use oil or grease on the
bolts or nuts. Doing so may lead
    to overtightening the nuts and
    damaging the bolts. The nuts
may loosen and the wheels may
fall off, which could cause a serious
accident. If there is oil or
grease on any bolt or nut, clean
    it.

    10.Lower the vehicle completely
    and tighten the wheel nuts.
Turn the jack handle end with the extension
    counterclockwise with handle
to lower the vehicle, making sure the
handle remains firmly fitted onto the
    jack handle extension.
Use only the wheel nut wrench and
turn it clockwise to tighten the nuts.
Do not use other tools or any additional
    leverage other than your hands,
such as a hammer, pipe or your foot.
Make sure the wrench is securely engaged
    over the nut.
Tighten each nut a little at a time in
the order shown. Repeat the process
until all the nuts are tight.

    CAUTION
    When lowering the vehicle,
make sure all portions of your
    body and all other persons
around will not be injured as
the vehicle is lowered to the
    ground.

    Have the wheel nuts tightened
with torque wrench to 113 N·m
    (11.5 kgf·m, 85 ft·lbf), as soon
    as possible after changing
    wheels. Otherwise, the nuts
    may loosen and the wheels
may fall off, which could cause
    a serious accident.

This info is what I found off the internet concerning this subject of nut lug sequence:

If the people servicing your car are using rattle guns without torque sticks to put your lug nuts back on you need to stop doing business there.

Got an idea brewing for a taquito to match the taco truck. Anybody remember a build thread on here about taking a totaled tacoma and making a trailer out of it? It was a super blue truck and trailer.

also, anyone know about what a front end obliterated totaled tacoma runs from a insurance yard?
