Valve Covers Leaking a bit.

    240K on my 03 Tacoma

    Vavle covers are leaking a little. I have already torqued it back down.

    Time to replace the gasket.

    Before I start this job, is there anything else recomended to change while I am in there? Even if its unrelated to this part.

    Trying to order what I need.

    Any help would be appretiated. Thanks again guys.

    spark plug grommets, there are also these half moon pieces that you need to remove, clean up and re-apply liquid gasket too. Also the bolts have these rubber grommets on them too.

    Since you're taking the intake manifold off to get to the driver side valve cover might as well replace some hoses under there.

    Is this a v6?

    Pcv valve gasket.....spark plugs and wires while you are at it. Also clean throttle body while you are at it

    I tightened mine down as they were very loose. I just gave it a half turn. Leak stopped.....

    put a PCV valve in her at the same time... this helps eliminate the crap build up in the VC area and take a VERY good look at the coolant lines that go to the "warm up valve" on the bottom of the throttle body, or better yet, just replace them. The vacuum Y could be looked at also.

    I just did this a few weeks ago. It's pretty easy, just go slow and label stuff. Use some simple green or similar degreaser and clean the engine bay really well so you don't knock dirt into the head once the covers are removed. Hard part is cleaning out the old gasket material around the half moon pieces. Luckily, the Toyota FIPG likes to come off pretty well. The wiring harnesses are in the way a bit so before you put any gasket material down practice maneuvering the valve cover under the harness so as to come straight down onto the head, so you don't smear the FIPG. The spark plug tube seals will help a bit with this. There are also a few random brackets to unbolt. On the back of the engine, passenger side a little nut that holds the wiring harness, and under the manifold on the drivers there is a little one somewhere in there that will need to come off.

    I didn't do the PCV valve gasket, but I should have. Oh well. The tube gaskets are pretty easy, just place the biggest socket that will fit and then tap them to bust them. Then go in with a chisel or old screw driver and hammer and bend the outer edge so you can get some needle nose pliers on it and pry them out.

    After disassembling my manifold so many times and removing my valve cover so many times, my official time is 32 minutes for manifold gaskets and the drivers side valve cover :D (12 for the mani and 20 for a valve cover)
    Also a good tip for seating the spark plug tubes is the get a 13/16ths socket and use it to uniformly push the seal over the tube.

    Did mine last week took me bout hour and half. Make sure you reseal cam plug and half moons in the heads. Pretty easy job

    No just use ultra grey sealant reseal them stick them back in. There just aluminum half moons that's all

    Well hell...either my OCD kicked in and really slowed me down, or I just suck. Lol, I can see the manifold gaskets taking not so long but I was pretty meticulous with the cover gaskets. I labeled connections, vacuum mostly. Getting them cleaned up and whatnot, also playing with my new torque wrench...

    Dont worry lol, I disassembled everything atleast 20 times, because turbo lol. (and chasing oil leaks)
