I earned my Eagle in the '90s and help with our local Scout troop now. It's getting harder every year to find the parental support that's so critical to helping the boys succeed in the program. Looks like BSA is making the uphill battle even steeper now.

It’s all about money. I have family members that work/have worked in the organization, and myself being close to it, this is nothing but a numbers game. Enrollment numbers arent doing well, and the continuing “public” backlash, if you can even call it that since it really just stems from loud volume minority groups, has not been good either. Like when the talks were all about barring homosexuals and then funding companies decided to all the sudden snip donations because public eye was hot over the whole deal, like UPS for example.

But when it comes down to it, what proportion of females are really dying to get into the boyscouts? They are already allowed in venture crews, but how many are really vying for BSA membership to go up through the ranks? I for one am not sure but I’d imagine the number is nil in the scale of male membership.

Former Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Explorer Scout and now Den Leader, and Asst Scoutmaster here-- My boys are a Star Scout and a Bear Cub Scout.

What you said is 100% correct.

BSA has substantially raised registration fees- 2 years ago, and again this year.
(BSA and Girl Scouts have nothing to do with each other.) I bet Girl Scouts are not happy! We will see how this all rolls out; not the biggest fan of this new decision but we'll see.
Remember- the military allows women too. :oldglory:

Yep it was forever ago. No special trips, lots of canvas tents were saved. Barely made it like 1 month before my 18th. Great times!

    Especially after yesterdays announcement. Unreal.

My brother and I were looking forward to having his two boys be scouts. Not anymore. End of an era.

Take a look at your local unit, first. Then decide. :)

Previous changes had ZERO impact in my area. BSA standards are actually tougher.

My brother will. But he lives in Santa Cruz, CA and they are a bastion of progressive thinking. Maybe he will get lucky. :notsure:

NPR had an article on it this am on my way to work. Basically, the GS corporate aren't happy about it, but a more local rep basically echoed @JdevTac 's thoughts.

Eagle Scout '99 paper work into council 1 week before my 18th birthday ended up having the BOR a month after.

    OA sash member only

Philmont twice (1 month tour de US each time driving from NC), '97 nat'l Jamboree, Current Assistant scoutmaster for the same troop I was in as a kid under the same Scoutmaster.

Eagle Project was to build 12 10ft picnic tables for a local museum surprisingly they are still in use almost 20 yrs later. Take my daughter to the museum and get to show her what I did. Hold the record in my troop for the most man hrs in an eagle project forget the exact #.

The decision came after the big corporate guys surveyed families asking if they would like their daughters in a program like BSA. That was it nothing more and that compelled them to allow the girls. Now still the COR has to approve the acceptance of the Gays, trans, girls etc. Still if your CO doesn't accept them then they can not allow it. But if they would like to accept them then BSA's policy is they'll allow it.

Yes this is very much a $$$$ move and GS is overwhelmingly upset over it. Our CO has 2 GS troops a cub scout pack, venture crew, and BSA troop. We have no clue what their decision on this whole deal is going to be.

My biggest worry as an Eagle Scout is that what was once an esteemed honor and greatly respected rank, it will become a joke and not stand for what it once did.

I learned most of what I know in scouts and the last thing I want is for it to become a joke!
