Ever since I got my rig i had been using Chevron Premium... Last 3 tanks decided maybe it was overkill and changed to Regular...

Engine pings/knocks even while taking off during normal acceleration...

Figured it was just computer not "used" to it, so tried for 3 tanks, to see if it'd adjust...

No luck, so filled with Mid/Plus today and it seems to have gone mostly back to normal (no ping/knocking)...

    Anybody else have similar issue???

I stick with 87 if I can get it in the desert SW, 88 if I can’t. No issues. I used 86 on her maiden voyage, but I prefer not to try again.

93 is all I will feed my truck. I’ve never filled it with anything else, and probably won’t.

I’ve seen and read to many other threads about knocking and pinging with lower quality gas. I’m probably overdoing it/overpaying , but I’m fine with that.

Hhhmmm, didnt think of that. Figured it'd computer would learn within a tank or two...

Will def try again next tank to see...

Another thing i noticed is that MPG went to shit with Regular, but it could be cause of the timing being "off"...

I use 89 non ethanol pure gas and it’s the ftw for the taco imho ! Runs great , and I get 24.5 - 25 mpg on every fill up.
Was using 87 e-10 for the first 10k miles and was getting 22 mpg but my truck didn’t run as well as it does now. The pure 89 cost the same as the corn fed premium but my taco is happy without the corn.

In AZ we only seem to have lo and hi... When I run lo, I get the spark knock. I run the hi unless I'm filling up with around half tank, then I go lo.

Can anyone describe to me the "pinging" noise. Dont think I have heard it. Haven't ran 87 yet. Mostly 90. I however have been thinking of switching. Is this a noise that I would notice? What exactly is causing the pinging? Thanks.

Are you guys sure its pinging your hearing? I'd be very surprised if its in fact pinging your hearing.

I've used regular (87) from new and have heard nothing remotely sounding like pinging/knocking.

Personally I doubt it's knocking and pinging you are hearing, if it is then your motor is screwed already cause by the time you can actually hear it, the damage is being done. The knock sensors pick it up WAY before any ear can hear it and retards the timing enough to stop the ping

I follow the book. Unleaded regular, top-tier. I try to keep mostly non-ethanol gas in it, but will throw in a tank of the usual stuff when I must.

I run ethanol-free whenever possible because I don't drive that many miles and have a hard time burning a single tank of gas in a month. I want to avoid moisture build-up in the tank and don't like measuring additives. I run the premium variety because most of the gas stations around here that offer ethanol-free only offer it in premium not regular. Hell, I use premium, ethanol-free in my lawn mower. LOL

My gen 2 DCSB 6spd did this whenever there were gas runs in tx and all you could find was regular. I also switched back to shell premium and the pinging has gone away for me as well. I avoid Valero gas stations like the plague now :bikewheelie:
