Just picked mine up after reporting the howl.

They heard it and said "It's normal".

    Documented.

The question is, do you have the howl still or not with the new one?

I fixed the noise! I took it in to the dealership and said:

I'll take that 2017 Subaru Outback 2.5l Limited you have. (It was a Subaru dealership). BOOM, problem solveed.

No more howl for me. The mods locked my thread about it: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/i-did-a-thing.513640/#post-16179977

I hope Toyota fixes this for you but I ran out of patience and I really hated driving the damn thing.

So your truck didn't "studder" at all before the trip to the dealer? I ask because this is a fairly common complaint, and is most likely due to the stock ECM tune and not your transmission. Over in the OVtune thread, this issue has come up several times and IIRC correctly it was related to ignition timing.

DO you know if the dealer flashed your ECM or unhooked the battery during that visit?

Edit: FWIW, I've had the "studder" since day one (on the stock tune) under those same conditions. I reduced it somewhat by running 91 Octane E0 gas, and it's all but gone after flashing my ECM with the Orange Virus ECM tune.

Not an option for me. I came from a Subaru to this Toyota and I will not be going back...

Good luck and enjoy your Subaru.

Leather interior, Fox Shocks, TRD leafs, One inch leveling kit, wheels are spaced out to be pretty flush with fenders, black everything (emblems, grill, accents including inner headlight) TRD aluminum skid plate... and yea I think thats about it.

Just to give everyone an update... So far, the howl has not come back. However, I do have a new howl.. maybe you guys are familiar.
Around the same speeds but it isn't when feathering throttle. it's when accelerating and you can hear the howl wind up as you accelerate up to 65. Noise is gone after 65. Noise is there when around 45-60 on throttle and off throttle.

This goes to show that whoever/wherever these differentials are being assembled, they're doing sub par work. It's either the contact pattern, ( coast pattern) or ( acceleration side) or blacklash and possible pinnion ring is that is producing these sounds. Toyota knows this... But they don't give a shit. If you take it to ANY differential shop they'll tell you its not normal.

Toyota techs aren't paid enough money to care. Its easier to draft up a memo and inform the customer " normal characteristic" and send you on your way. Toyota is just riding on their reputation.. Sooner or later these issues will see the light of day and they have with the gasket recall.

The fact they aren't giving a explanation as to why these sounds are being produced, suggests a cover up or denial of the issue.

I often wonder if the real issue is that the cab is so quiet, you can hear the differential. I sold my 2005 Z-71 with 180K miles on it to buy my 2016 TRDOR. I bought the Chevy with less than 5K miles on it back in '05, and I brought up to the techs that I could hear the rear end when I feathered the throttle within the first year of ownership. They took a look, told me everything was normal, and gave it back. Almost 200K miles later, I sold the truck with the exact same noise that I bought it with. The buyer had a thorough check done on the truck and the mechanic pointed out the rear diff noise. He checked it, and said it had plenty of life left.

I recall having two 4 Runners over the years. One being a 2002 sport. I never heard any differential noise or anything like that. Then a 94 4 Runner with the 3.0 3VZ. Both of them never made any drivetrain noise. 4 Runners still have drivelines similar to Tacoma's.

Ironically both built in Japan, when quality was still a matter of importance.

Yeah. My first brand new truck purchase was a 1990 Toyota 4x4 pickup (3.0) which I also put 200K miles on, and I'm not sure I could've heard the differential over all of the other noises. HAHA. I still have an '86 Toyota 4x4 Pickup and I can tell you that it's a symphony when you drive it, even with a new engine, transfer case, and 2 rebuilt diffs that were set up by hand. My point is, the cabins on these trucks are amazingly quiet compared to our old ones. I've driven a few of the new body style and I can make out the noise in all of them when feathering the throttle between 50-60mph. Time will tell if it's an issue or truly just a characteristic of the vehicle.

The cabins are quiet. I had a loud differential I believe on my 06 Nissan Xterra offroad with 100k. I took it offroading, I purchased it at 50k. It was only till 100k did I hear any whinning. But that is expected. I replaced the differential fluid myself with cheap Valvoline synpower. 75W90. But prior to that. No differential noise. All I could hear is the sound of the VQ40DE V-6, which had wayy more low end torque than new Tacomas 3.5 2GRE-FKS V-6
