On some maps called Mision 'Santa Maria Magdalena', but was it?









An aqueduct was carved into the cliff by the Spanish and their Indian workers:



Further north, near Vizcaino, is a section of the old Baja main road, used before the highway was finished in 1973. The first Baja 1000 races ran on this (1967-1973):

Our motel in El Rosario, perhaps the finest in Baja, was the Baja Cactus Motel, next to the Pemex station:



Most of the Baja Highway south of San Quintin is only 19 feet wide!

I think it's soo sick how you travel and sightsee all of baja. I love going down there for the Baja races and the scenery is unbelievable. If you do get some sort of trip set up, i'm down to go!

 

This is EXACTLY how I know BAJA California Mexico.. It's the most beautiful desert.. with LOTS of trails of course.

Glad you enjoyed them... I just finished posting another Baja trip in this forum (Across Baja via Mike's Sky Rancho, a 2 parter).

Here's my '05 on the road to Mision Santa Maria:

 

Do you typically stay in hotels/motels whatever you call them there or do you like to camp as well?

 

Typically we camp when in Baja... as you can see from the beach photos (Shell Island) or Mision Santa Maria trip photos I have posted on TW... as there are no motels, or civilzation at those places. We love the outdoors, and keep things simple yet comfortable... air mattress, tent, sun canopy, one or two ice chests for food and cold beer/ water, table, chairs, fire wood.

There are times we stay in a motel or a bed & breakfast, because it is just a one nighter enroute to somewhere else and setting up camp is a bit of work for just one night... plus, motels are cheap in Mexico.

One of the finest motels is in El Rosario, 225 miles south of the border (Tijuana) and makes a perfect end to a days drive from our home. El Rosario is town on the edge of the great central desert of Baja... it is the end of the phone and power lines coming south... there are several restaurants and taco stands there. The motel is called 'Baja Cactus' and is next door to the Pemex (gas) station, also owned by Baja Cactus. The place was totally remodeled and expanded in 2004 and offeres 'luxeries' not found in most roadside motels... custom mattress king size beds, English/ Spanish satellite TV, in room coffee maker, bottled water, heating and AC, phone in room that can connect with anywhere, Internet, 24 hour desk clerk... all for about $35. On the other end of El Rosario is another bargain, a brand new motel called the TURISTA MOTEL... nice rooms and very comfortable beds and only $25/ night. There are two other motels and a bed & breakfast in El Rosario, as well.

On our July trip (this thread's subject) was a bit different than most of our Baja trips... We were on our one year's anniversary and were offered a two night stay at Playa Frambes Lighthouse Resort (on Bahia Concepcion), as a wedding gift! The place is awesome and very exclussive... http://www.mulege.org Since it is a two/ three days drive from home, we stayed in El Rosario the first night and San Ignacio's bed & breakfast 'Ignacio Springs' the second night, on the way to Playa Frambes. Night 5 was at a motel in Loreto, and night 6 was our only camping night of tht trip at Playa La Perla on Bahia Concepcion. Night 7 was back at El Rosario, on our way home... at Baja Cactus Motel.

The owner of Baja Cactus, Antonio (who was in Tijuana at the time) found out it was my wife's birthday on another trip, and had the staff surprise us with a birthday cake!! Here we are at the front desk of Baja Cactus... Things like this is what makes trips to Baja so wonderful... the people are just great! Can't wait to get back to Baja!
