I'd say the main factor would be is do you want a short bed or a long bed? The rest are fairly cheap accessories.

I think that is where I am stuck at, Not sure if I need a long bed. Originally I was looking for a short bed. Then again the long bed will save me a 7hr trip.

Yea I don't care too much about the accessories.

I would think about what you use the bed for and read the input of other users on this thread. Short bed easier on city driving/parking and long bed better for hauling.

    Hi Alex,
I went with the short bed on my truck. I preferred the look over the long bed. The Xtra foot or so in length between the two wasn't really a concern for me but it was a consideration. An extra foot or so in length can make a big difference in some parking situations. As far as payload goes a Darby Extend-A-Bed removed any concerns that I had about what I could carry back there. Canoes, kayaks, lumber, not a problem.
I'd go with your gut and which one you liked better. A 7hr. drive is definitely a consideration but you're going to be driving your Tacoma for a long time. Go with what you will get the most enjoyment from driving and owning. One way or the other it's still a Tacoma.

Hey Alex, a 7 hour drive home is not a bad way to get a good feel for your new truck. I'd imagine you really wouldn't even notice the long drive with a new truck. As far as a long or short bed, that is a personal preference. If you are planning on going off-road with it just keep in mind the long wheelbase will have a better chance of high centering than a short bed. There are pro's and con's for both, it just really depends on what fits your needs. Good luck!

100% personal preference on long and short. I mulled that over as well. Went short bed more or less because I liked the aesthetics of the truck more with a short bed. 7 hour ride would suck I'll say that.

Check out truecrar. Doesn't cost anything and the quote that I received from dealers participating in the truecar program were typically much lower than dealerships that weren't. Nice thing about it is that you can get quotes from participating dealers and never leave your living room. Will save you lots of gas and leg work and give you something to work with when talking to dealers that are not in the program. Saved me a couple thousand dollars and a lot of running around. Remember dealer mentality, "just get them here, we'll sell them something!"

It depends on the options. 4x2 vs 4x4, premium, tech, tow, etc, etc, etc

Cant believe the prices on the 3rd Gens. I purchased a brand new 2003 DC, 4wd, TRD, SR5 with tow package priced at under 28K, that was 14 years ago but still. That same model and options on a 17 would cost me close to 40K now. Toyota is about to price themselves out of the market if the trend continues.

What cost $28000 in 2003 would cost $37443.28 in 2017.

That inflation isn’t a joke. 2% inflation rate adds up quick over 14 years.

Buy a slightly used Tacoma and save some cash.

So I am getting ready to buy...
gave Freeman Toyota in Santa Rosa a call last week and they didn't have what I wanted.

Went to a "more" local dealer in Nor Cal and ran into my wifes family friend. He says he will sell the truck at invoice.
I should have snapped a photo of the sticker but didn't but it was
    Black TRD Sport DCSB 4x4
with the following options from what I saw: Tow, Prem & Tech w. JBL
According to the Cost Maser List thread, invoice is around 35.5K
would it be an insult if I tell him 35K otd? (before ttl)

I did the whole email dealers deal a yr ago and it didn't help. Costco program was "invoice"+500. but never had the truck in black. so finely found what I want and do not want to insult the guy but it seems others have gotten away with 35 OTD.

Median household income is $58,419 according to this article in the U.S
    https://seekingalpha.com/article/4111556-august-2017-median-household-income
Median household income in 2003 was $43k according to this map from census.
    https://www.census.gov/did/www/saipe/data/statecounty/maps/iy2003/med_hh_inc2003.pdf
Median income has rose 26% in the past 14 years. 2% standard inflation times 14 years is 28% increase in consumer goods. So yes, wages haven’t kept up with inflation but it’s only off by 2%.

Don't forget all the extra tech and safety enhancements. I had a 2001 DC back in the day. It didn't even have ABS! Crash test rating on the new model is so much better, ride is much smoother, engine more powerful, and sonars/Bluetooth/etc. all make it a BETTER truck, while keeping the relative price about the same. It could be argued that cars have become cheaper.
