The independent shops both recommend a tear down. One shop did not charge me, other cost $ 25.00 they even had 2nd Gen Tacomas with trucks parked outside. The driveline/differential shop says they do 5-10 carrier bearing jobs/differential jobs on 2d gens a month. Both shops have told me its the contact pattern/ or bearing.

The dealerships have told me its " normal". So I went around them to corporate, then executive who ultimately took the FST opinion on a set of handwritten notes in a format of 4 sentences that made the whole ordeal go south and caused them to close my case.

Seems like Toyota went to the lowest bidder for supply of the diff assemblies and then didn't properly field test or enforce quality controls over said vendor.

The driveline shop told me exactly that. They think Toyota is getting screwed by their supplier. He said OEM gearsets should not make that noise because they come pre-lapped Aftermarket gearsets can make noise because they're not-prelapped which is why the first 500 miles is critical.

I have went through the lemon law in my state. I varies a little state by state I think. It can be a long process, but in the end it can be worth it. They even paid me back for all the accessories I had added to the truck. How many times has it been to the dealer for the same issue?

I am a little confused. What are you going to lemon law? A diff they say is operating perfectly normal and that hasn't been replaced or failed 3 times? Also what does an independent shop that does 5 or so 2nd gen trucks diffs a month have anything to do with a 3rd gen? Are they the exact same diff?

Anyone have diff failure not related to fluid loss or banging it into rocks on the trail? Has there been a documented failure related directly to noisy diff from either 2nd or 3rd gens?

If not and many might not like this but you just might end up with a perfectly functional noisy diff.

The way I understand it to be. The lemon law process doesn't require 3 actual attempts at repairing it. Meaning 3 differential have to be put in. The mere fact of you just showing up for 3 different ' attempts'. Notice I say " attempts" if you're able to prove via independent shops that goes against Toyota. The burden of proof relies on Toyota to prove its " normal".

I mentioned 2nd gens because they have experience with Tacomas.

So you can lemon something you don't like even if it hasn't failed?

Well define " failure" a noise to me indicates a bearing failure or contact pattern that is " not normal". Toyota has never stated why its " normal".

What if it's gear whine at a certain speed and not related to bearings?

If you want to lemon it, I would just get a lawyer and start there. The first thing they'll probably tell you is to stop posting on public forums about it.

My diff howled until I upgraded to 265/75/16 E load tires. Now I'm on 35's and it hasn't howled since.
