wow what a dick move on the jeeps parts. good for you trying to help. thread derail over. one of the reason i put a cb in my truck to talk to others and maybe reach somebody if im stuck. im jumping on the HAM wagon soon. I dont have a link but its on TW somewhere about a Death Valley recovery where TW people were able to locate his truck via HAM and fix it all before the guy got back. really good read about people helping each other.

Midland 75-822 as well. I have two, one that I keep as a handheld and one that I hardwired and run with a Firestik antenna. It's a compact unit, so the whole CB in just in the little unit.

OP, you'll get bashed by all the HAM fanboys for asking about CB. I have both CB and HAM. HAM is nice for the power and range, however CB is WAY more common among the offroaders I've encountered on the trails.

Don't get me wrong; HAM is nice and performs better than CB for the most part. But it never hurts to have both.

I agree. It's usually the "overlanders" who push out HAM on everyone.

 

my question with HAM is who the hell you talking to. I could talk to my wife and kids when im gone which would be cool but thats all i could see myself using it for unless im lost and need help but they make PLB now which is the route i might go. CB are perfect when on the trail

Cobra 75wxst - super easy and cheap.
CB is a toy, if others have it it can be useful, but HAM is much better for emergency/ repeaters/ autopatch/ APRS.. etc etc.

I got a Midland 1001LWX CB - mostly for the NOAA weather radio function. Otherwise, the radio range is short - but will work with accompanying trucks on the trail.

 

oh yea forgot about the weather application as well. I remember once were were mounting biking in MOAB way out of cell service and were randomly riding with some east coast yuppie type. when we got back to the trucks some weather was moving in that we were not expecting and they were getting so frustrated with their phones not working, and ill i did was turn on the CB very loud with the doors open and before you knew it they were all flocked around my truck listing.

 

The NOAA weather is definitely useful.

Midland 75-822... didnt require any SWR tuning for trail runs.... it was good right out of the box.

 

Maybe this is obvious and maybe you were being sarcastic but... just in case... You can run through the firewall... then you don't need to drill holes.

 

actually, that really was bothering me but that grommet under the drivers seat sound pretty interesting.

 

There are also a few up behind the glove box on the firewall. Or around the a/c lines on the drivers side..

 

CB's are great, and there is a way you can get the range of a HAM with a CB. While I was stationed at Fort Polk I worked part time at the Fire Department and the Chief could talk to people in other states on a mobile CB radio not a base unit. You just need to know the right people to hook you up with the equipment needed, I am not telling anyone to go out and get the equipment, but letting you know there is a way to get the range you need, so in a sense "don't try this at home", you know how it goes with that line.

Unless you're near a mtn and can hit a repeater on 2m. In that case your portable $35 hand held with a decent antena can now reach way past cb.
