A penetrating oil needs any excess wiped off after about 15-30 min. If not, that is why it gets sticky. It's designed to soak into the wood and add protection. It doesn't harden properly when it sits on top.

How long has the wood been on the deck? most wood needs a while to dry properly before you put the finish on. Othewise it doesn't really soak in.

Wood was really dry, had it in my garage during very hot weather for a few weeks plus it was installed for a few weeks in hot weather, so it had plenty of time to dry out from the mill.

I'm sure at this point the issue is because I (stupidly) tried to get the excess to drip into the seams to coat the edges, which it did, but that cost me all this grief. I didn't go back over it enough within the 15-30 minutes like you described and back-pad it better. Probably (if I was gonna apply it like I did) should have had two pads... one for the initial application, another to wipe off excess from the top of all boards.

At this point I'm just gonna use it (gets less tacky every day) and then come spring strip, clean, and refinish.

Unless the wood was dried at the yard, and if it was it would be marked as such, you need to let wood dry for months. With PT I think the recommend 6-12 months before staining. Not sure about cedar.

All MDF. Not my design, I just do what I am paid to do. Ugly as sin IMO.

I'm glad it wasn't "Owner got tired of his 100 year old solid mahogany panels so he had me paint them white". that's what I was thinking at first.

I like wood. All the new prefinished "maintenance free" materials are too common and generic for my tastes.
To me it is like the difference between IKEA furniture and an antique.
