I would guestimate it would cost about $2k in materials alone. I know Audison is a top of the line company and their products are not cheap. It doesn't look like too complex of an install. It would be an awesome mod for sure.

haha and here we were thinking regular headunits got stolen alot, just wait till people start putting these in their cars.

 

For the iPod functionality, you could just use.... an iPod or any other mp3 player; and you can take it with you when you leave. $629 is just for the iPad. You still need the other stuff to get it working with your system. For $700-1000, you'll have a very capable head unit that works better than the iPad with much less modification (DVDs, integrated nav & bluetooth, sat radio ready). Hook an iPhone to it and it does everything the iPad does.

You also don't have to update the maps every year. Roads don't change that much. I've got GPS handhelds that are a couple of years old and they still work fine (I travel a lot). $15-$30/month works out to $180-$360 per year. That's a lot of map updates. You could even buy a new gps unit every year for that price.

Your maps and gps functionality will only be as good as your cell connection.

 

Right, but your head unit will never be able to receive email, manage your contacts, display a book for your girl friend in the passenger seat, be a gaming console, browse the web, and I can go on for days. 9.7" beats the hell out of 7.1" especially when you CAN display higher resolution videos. I am just saying there are more possibilities. And of course, iPad is not for everyone, but it will work out for a lot of people. iPad would be perfect for my life style. You take down your little GPS every time you exit your vehicle anyways.
