I wish I could have stopped and took a picture of an old 1980's Toyota Tacoma reg cab 4wd this morning. It was at a gas station as I was getting on the freeway. As usually running behind and had to move on down the road. It had what looked like Mickey Thompson's on it and a 8000lb warren winch. They make UTV bigger than those trucks now.

I purchased a 2001 years ago and it had over 300,000 miles when my son totaled it out. I have since purchased a 2007 and will try and get 500,000 miles on it or until I die. That was the goal with the 2001 so I just transferred it to this 07 with 190,000

I wish I had to space to have kept my old truck. But she was getting tired, I flogged it and it needed more than superficial mending. Imelda the Wonder Truck went to a friend, who still drives it daily and used it for his landscaping work. If I had a shop and somewhere to work I'd have done the frame-up rebuild. One day I will have the space. Which is something I've been saying for 25 years and I'm 46 now, so I'm starting to doubt things are going to ever fall into place.

I’ll probably sell it somewhere around 180k which could take another decade (only have 101k now). Seems like once they hit 200k they get harder to sell.

I figured someone here would have done some serious math on the best time to resell the truck to get the best return while they are purchasing new. Anyone have a theory on this?

I can't speak for everybody here, I bought a Tacoma for its longevity. I didn't buy it to sell it or trade it in. The thought has crossed my mind once or twice but I just do some reading on here about what a turd the new one is so I'm content with mine. She's paid off so it's no longer a liability. Dealer offered me 25k trade in for a new one, told them to go fly a kite.

Being a few years older, I would tell you to keep dreaming... sometimes things do fall in place... though not necessarily in a manner that you expect.

As a 25 y/o this is depressing to hear...

Sometimes you got push and bang on things to make them fall in place!

My 2008 just hit 102K. Today's price on a new Tacoma is insane ! I plan on running my truck till it dies, gets stolen, or totaled.

Financially the way to go is buy a slightly used vehicle, maybe 2 or so years old. New enough to be mechanically sound but old enough to let someone else buy down the initial depreciation. Then drive it until the maintenance starts to go hyperbolic. With older Toyotas (and Hondas that I've had too) that meant about a 25 year total service life but with newer cars it seems to be about 15 or so. That's been my experience anyway, that after about 15 years you have to either commit to the car or move on. For me something older than 15 years isn't a problem since I do all my own work but when you're facing rebuilding engines and transmissions paying someone to do that changes the calculus.

    Forever.

I just bought a 2003 Double Cab with 170,000. Going through it mechanically right now before I officially put it on the road. I felt like I got a great deal on it so I have money left over for a few "luxuries". Once I feel the car is in order (the night I bought it I drove it 200 miles home but I like to go through my vehicles personally when I get them.) I'll sell my other car and this 170,000 mile truck will become my daily driver for 2 - 3 years. I only drive about 10,000 miles a year. In 2 - 3 years I'll buy another car and the Tacoma will become the spare. Truck, landscape vehicle, loaner, emergency, spare, explorer whatever I call this Tacoma in a few years I expect that I'll have it for a very long time. I've always liked having a second vehicle I've just never had a truck and a truck makes so much sense as a second vehicle.

My uncle keeps as old, '76 Silverado I think, in his barn. It was old when I visited them 30 years ago and borrowed it. It is still used on the farm to pick up landscaping material. That's what I want for my Tacoma. The old friend that is always there when you need him.
