The decisions I've made for myself come from over 2 decades of navigating Florida backwoods, fire breaks, and blackwater. My gear consists of items I've either used before or needed to have but didn't (spending 6+ hours freeing a 2WD S10 from a mud hole tends to inspire one to prepare). I do also subscribe to the "prepare for the worst and hope for the best" mentality. I'll admit, this vehicle doesn't have loads of time spent off road, but that is partially due to the fact I typically only get 2-3 days off per month (out of the 6-10 days I actually see my house).

    Thank you LMarshell73.

That is definitely an answer that has merit. Honest and pure.

I'll bet you are looking forward to retirement to get a few more days a week to explore. 2-3 days a month is rough.

Ok I'll try to answer your second question because who cares how people pay for their stuff.

Maxtrax are traction boards that you stick under your tires if you get stuck in loose sand, mud, or snow. They come in orange too which is a visually pleasing color. Rotopax are overpriced fuel containers that allow you to extend your travel range. An axe is useful for splitting logs at a camp site, clearing small trees that are blocking a road, and throwing at stuff. A shovel is good for digging shit holes and many places require you to have them during fire season. Hi-Lifts are good for jacking your truck up to do repairs or change a tire if you have a lift as the factory jack doesn't have enough extension. Also good for injuring hillbillies. Jerry cans are durable fuel containers. Winches can help you get over obstacles or to help recover another vehicle that's in a precarious position. Lights let you see stuff in the dark. I have no explanation for patches but lots of people like them and you can't see them unless you get in their truck.

Whether you need any, all, or none of that stuff depends on what you do with your truck. I think that covers everything...

    Thanks BenTheMan,
Excellent explanation of what said items are, and some ways to use them. This should come in handy for those that are just getting their shopping list together and may not fully understand why they are purchasing them, or when said item will come in handy.

I've looked at your truck thread before, and just looked again to see what adventures you've been up to lately.
Your truck certainly gets a workout.

    Love your "Mule" project.

I miss my '85 XtraCab. Would love to find it and buy it back. Such a simple truck.

Who the hell finances tools that doesn’t use them to earn their living? That’s as stupid as the people in the collectible LandCruiser world looking to finance the 70 Series they want. If you can’t afford to pay cash, don’t go buying 25 year old cars. All of my camping/wheeling kit was paid for directly out of pocket.

Thanks! I really love the 85. It's going back up on jacks starting this weekend to get some work done.

To quote my lifelong hero, Russell Coight. “It’s quite simple to explain really, all you need is someone who understands it all to explain it to us.”

I gotta admit, I'm a little irritated by this trend that is arising of the "authentic" guys talking smack on the "newbies" and the "poseurs." That's just making yourself feel better at the expense of others.

The more, the merrier. Shit, at the very least, the more people purchasing, the bigger the market, the lower the prices, the greater the diversity in products. I don't even care if someone buys and outfits a truck and never takes it out. If they just aspire to one day get out, that's fine with me. More cool rigs to look at.

And I carry a lot of gear with me, too. Partly because I was a Boy Scout and I was taught to always be prepared. If I take an expensive piece of equipment out into the wilderness and get it stuck in the sand, well, then I'm the dumb ass for not bringing extraction gear (Maxtrax, winch, shovel, etc.).
