I like the simplicity of the 4.0. No cylinder shut-off hardware, no DFI. Not as many parts to break when I have 300,000+ miles on it. The motor is so tough you can put a supercharger kit on it and not change any valves/pistons.

I'll give up 2mpg over the lifetime of the engine if it means spending less $$ to keep it running. I don't care at all about the power or how fast it gets to 60. It's got plenty of juice for everything I've done with it so far.

40 rods equal 9.99998 chains. I drive using chains every day, just like miles. ! mile equals 80 chains.

    Flip the switch!!!

I sold my 2017 TRD OFF road cuz the engine / tranny combo sucked.....even with using the ECT button it felt gutless...I'm crazy happy to be in a 2015 TRD PRO.....love the 4.0L and the TRD cat back exhaust!

    Yes.

The 4.0 L is a truck motor with a respectable amount of low end torque and sufficient mid and upper-mid level torque to keep the truck rolling with a 5-speed slushbox. This is why it bests the 3.5 L in the short drag race shown in the video. It could be that the 3rd gen could have made up the distance in a longer track but 1-1/2+ lengths is quite a bit of "making up".

The 3.5 L faux Atkinson capable engine is, as described by member Steadfast above, a "minivan/lexus" engine that has to be spun up faster before the torque kicks in, and needs a 6-speed transmission (many would argue for more) to allow the engine to find a comfortable gear within it's narrower usable torque band--that is the "hunting" many find so annoying. I suspect the 3.5/6-speed could have been better paired if Toyota had not been so focused on improving fuel economy.

Small Diesels--which seemingly many dream of one day seeing in the Tacoma--have very narrow usable torque bands, which is why the slushboxes they are paired with have 8 and even 10 gears...

0.5L more makes it a truck motor ? LOL. Thats splitting hairs. 4.0 is in the big boy camp I guess.
Tundra crew is laughing their arses off.
torque is the same, just different rpm.
50 hp more in 3rd gen and it kicks ass once it gets in that band.
I guess it doesn't keep it rolling in the Ike tow test now does it ? Ike tow 3rd gen beats 2nd gen by 45 seconds !!!!!!! Deal with it. Accept it.
Short drag yes, 500 feet, longer and its bye bye.
2nd gen is a done 2ndgone gen, get over it. Rusting away as we speak.

Chill bud. And if you knew how to drive a 4WD you would know crawl control is a gimmik. My truck has it also, years of experience and my right foot. You let you truck decide what to do when you run out of talent though.

LOL, well I am 38 but sure. Dude enjoy your 3rd gen. No one is attacking you, no need to defend the 3rd gen so hard. It's a truck. Not a truck I like but I am not bothered that you do. I have a truck for truck shit and a much faster vehicle for that. Someone will always have more HP! Well being you are in a 3rd gen i guess most people will have more HP. JK...

It has nothing (well little) to do with displacement--similar engines can be designed and built to provide differing torque, HP and upper rpm limits so as to best fit the intended application--intake and exhaust flow, camshaft specs, compression ratios, tuning and numerous other parameters can and are used to affect an engine performance and make it more suitable for a specific application.

Ford's workhorse 4.6 L SOHC "modular" V8 was produced with outputs from 190 HP (2000 F-150 and police cruisers) to 260 HP ('02-'04 Mustang GT)--each for their intended purpose. The truck and police engines had high low end torque right off idle, and a wide, flat curve but did not spin as fast. The Mustang engines sacrificed some of the "off-idle" low-end torque for a narrower more high-end torque peak. This was mostly done with camshafts and tuning.

Read John Heywood's Internal Combustion Engine Fundamentals, and Charles Taylor's The Internal Combustion Engine in Theory and Practice (2 volumes) and you will have the knowledge to understand how engine output can be manipulated...

Where is the TW Gen 2 and Gen 3 owners video comparing their rigs side by side in every imaginable mashup?
It's one thing to link a video from what could be a bias group of reporters, but real world tests from real world folks like you would be way more accurate!

Shouldn't be hard to round up a group of Gen 2 and Gen 3 die hards to put up or shut up.

Compare stock AT 4.0 with AT 3.5
Compare stock MT 4.0 with MT 3.5

Lets see some of these tests:

    1/8th mile drag
    1/4 mile drag
    1 mile drag

    0-30 tests
    0-60 tests
    0-90 tests

    Strait up tug of war.

    Mud tests
    Sand tests
    Hill climb test
    Hill descent test
    Rutted out hill climb test

Talk is cheap, lets see some real world action from you guys!
Wouldn't that put a shoe in it for a while? :notsure:
