Thanks for posting. Not really sure what the point of comparison is when they're using tires with 17,000 miles on the Tacoma, compared to what looks like perfectly new tires on the other two vehicles. You think they'd at least buy a fresh stock set for the comparison.

I'd hate to see these guys test performance cars under similar circumstances. Tires make a world of difference.

 

Maybe use the same sneakers on them, I'm sure there is a tire company out there that would hook them up with 12 treads.

 

I could do that hill in my Corolla.... Come on guys..... Get the F outta the City and drive "off road".... Not "on road" in the country....

I think these guys think OFF ROAD means "off pavement"......

 

Nothing in a stock vs. Stock test will ever beat a stock 2 door Rubicon. It is about as perfect as it comes.....

True - except for the whole reliability thing....

 

To their defense the new V6 is pretty reliable, better than the original JK V6

 

They did the same run with the Pro when the tires were more fresh, and it had the exact same problems.

Nice to see the ZR2 come with duratracs and a front locker. Boy the clearance though, even with larger tires.

 

Crazy thing is Jeep sells the same number of wranglers as Tacomas, and the Tacoma is multi purpose.

I had a 4 door wrangler for a while and in no way is it a practical vehicle.

I test drove a jeep before I bought my taco to see what all the hype was about. While I have no doubt the jeep is exceptional offroad, the taco does everything else including 974 miles of driving in a single day very well. After a 20 minute test drive in the jeep I thought I would shoot myself if I had to spend more than 3-4 hours behind the wheel in a single sitting.

 

I seen several of their video's. I think they do a good job. I've owned 4 Wranglers over the years. Their design is superior off road, no doubt about that. But I always viewed them as toys. Great for off road driving or riding topless, not good for much else. Other than that a Tacoma does everything else better and isn't bad at all off road.

 

I'm still surprised Toyota skimped out on the Pro tires. Better tires would make a HUGE difference. That Cliff Hanger 2.0 is pretty tough.

 

I think you gotta admit Jeeps are great off road vehicles. Approach and departure angles alone prove that. The only issue is they are not pickup trucks, so are not hampered by having to have a cargo bed, so the comparison’s not really “apples to apples”.

For pure off-roading, the Jeep would be a better choice, but as a road trip vehicle, hauler, or daily driver.........get outta town.......Wranglers suck for all that. Tacomas manage to do a lot of things pretty well.

 

Yes, because 3rd gen Tacos have ZERO issues, ever. Oh, wait....

Yeah I do agree. IMO if you want to really test the trucks capabilities you'd have the same tires; however, it does kinda make sense from a "stock vs. stock" comparison

Well I specified 3rd gen

My 97 Grand Cherokee was super reliable. I owned it for 12 years/165k miles and it never left me stranded even once.

 

I can say that about mine, as can the majority of 3rd gen owners. Now some do have issues, some have some serious issues, while others have issues realizing they bought a truck not a high class SUV.
