Hey Chris @chertzog. That round bottom is bitchin! Do you have a link to plans, and does the Hock iron have a radius? The #6 should shine up real nice. I'll start that this week.

Technically, there were no plans, but I followed Paul Sellers masterclass videos (free sign up - https://woodworkingmasterclasses.com/videos/making-wooden-plane/making-wooden-plane-episode-1/).

    As for the iron, yes, it's the 1.75" x 6" radius - http://www.hocktools.com/products/pi.html

I could use some pointers. I am making a pair of wood bodied hand planes, I have a pair of inexpensive wood chisels for the irons.

The application is bead and cove canoe strips made from Western Red Cedar, so pretty soft but kinda grainy. I am gearing up to build a 16' skiff out of canoe strips, but for the compound curves on the skiff, especially up by the forefoot, I am going to have to make some long skinny triangle shapes, and then put bead and cove on the long edges.

I do have a plenty of quarter sawn white oak for the plane bodies, it has been aging in the garage for 3+ years at maybe 2x3 inches and 16" long. Should be stable.

    1. What glue can I use to hold the three wooden layers (white oak) of the plane body together?

I did anneal both chisel tips today with a propane blow torch. I had the air intakes at the base of the burner wide open, had 8-10" of flame out of the torch mouth. I did keep the lights on in the garage, it seems like bright orange was a bright/hot as I could get the chisel tips. Held there for one minute each, they are air cooling overnight.

    2. If the working tips aren't annealed enough, do I need a sand bucket, mapp gas, both, or what exactly to make these more ductile so I can shape them?

Thanks in advance, I think I know which Dremel bit to use so I can shape one tip concave and the other convex.

My go-to glue for most everything is Tite-Bond II. I've never had a glue failure with it.

As for annealing the irons, as long as you get the soft enough to re-shape you should be fine. I've done some simple reshaping (putting a heavy camber on a scrub plane iron) on a still hardened iron. I just worked slowly at the bench grinder and kept dipping the iron in water to keep it cool.

It seems like mine are annealed enough. The convex one shaped up with a file in maybe 15 minutes, it seemed like the concave went even faster with a new chain saw sharpening file.

I have the middle layer of the prototype sandwich fabbed. Have some riffling to do, my iron is .251 wide but the red oak scrap i found is only .233 thick.

    20171008_223144-1.jpg

I guess for tonight ill anneal the ends of the irons where i cut the chisel handles off so those can be shaped tomorrow.

I think for the wood layers i will glue and clamp. Once the glue is dry i can drill through all the layers and then glue in through dowels for strength.

My first woodworking project since high school. Made as a gift. Liked it so much I almost kept it. Now I have to make another when I have some spare time....IMG_2432.jpg IMG_2424.jpg

that's a great looking birdhouse. I like the squirrel deterrent metal around the entrance.

Thanks. It's copper that I hammered & then aged in a ziplock with boiled eggs for the patina.

Found the idea online. Just boiled a couple eggs, peeled & sliced them while still hot & placed in a ziplock bag with the copper piece for a few hours. I'm excited to see how it holds up - I sprayed it with a clear paint.

I wanted a rustic cabinet for my dartboard, but the cheapest one I could find that I liked was $200!

So, I built my own for about 1/3 that price, including stain, brushes, and all hardware. Nothing fancy, but I like it.

    The backside after staining.

This was so rare that I had to get a picture...2 out of 3 in the bullseye. The third dart more accurately represents my usual attempts at the bullseye.

Nice! not a true dart board cabinet unless it has dart marks on the outside on the doors ;)

Finally finished my rocking chair. It's been about 8 months in the making. (took a couple months off to work on my taco, and had some other life stuff happen). Its good to finally have it off my bench. Its made from some extremely hard and curly ash. The pics don't do it justice.
