I am interested in installing an aftermarket stereo in my 2016 Tacoma that has Carplay, since Toyota doesn't support this feature. However, it is unclear whether or not this will affect the functionality of the little screen with the odometer on it. I know some functionality will be lost (navigation steps and song info I presume) but I want to verify the full effects of doing this before I commit. Thanks, all.

Correct as what was stated above. Idatalink maestro will keep all OEM functionality

Be aware, that installing an 8200NEX over an 8000NEX you run the risk of glitches and possible early headunit death. It is actually why I went with the flagship 8000 (capacitive touchscreen version) over the 8200. Both support iDatalink by the way.

    Tell us more?

I’ve also read reports of losing some of the console display directions and what not when swapping

Reviews on Amazon more than anything. I read a lot of similar comments talking about early death or glitches which is what prompted me to go for the 8000 instead. I didn't want any trouble.

My buddy was actually told the same but in person by a couple stereo shops. They were saying it was hit or miss with the unit as a whole. So it is not just an internet thing, this is actually really happening.

Well, I got my 8200NEX installed today, and here are my findings as it relates to the middle screen:
It seems that the location data isn't passed back to the truck, so the compass tab is completely blank, and upcoming turns don't show up.
BUT song information IS relayed back to the music tab, and you can even select inputs from that display.
Everything else works as you'd expect...Make sure you also get the iDatalink ACC-SAT-T02 so that you can integrate the trucks satellite radio and GPS antennas. Also, definitely connect the blue antenna wire to the amp remote turn-on wire AND the blue wire on the Maestro harness, this activates both the antenna and amp.

Hmm - this was the direction I been looking since the near constant reboots in the morning with the stock unit are driving me nuts and the entune system is pure cancer. I hated it in my other Toyotas and still hate it. I think I can still live with not having the data passback but would lose my mind with no steering wheel controls. lol.

Good news! The Maestro RR integrates the left-side steering wheel controls, you can map them out to your preferences when you flash the module.

I was under the impression that the right side would still work with the Pioneer's. I am looking at the 4100 since I don't need Nav in the unit (if out of coverage, I still don't use the unit - I have downloaded maps between Gaia and Google Maps) and use the phone exclusively as it is. Going to check it out tomorrow and schedule the install.

They did mention the Maestro RR though by name.

Is there an option to change these settings once the new head unit is installed? Or would I have to put in the old one for that?
