The break happened with about 300lbs in the back going down a rocky area while wheeling. I thought I had taken every precaution. Never imagined a fucking leaf would snap.

 

Thanks, I can't wait to share the details, I could have but it's part of my schemes. I will only offer longer shackles, I believe 3.4" shackles are strong enough and can be fitted with Energy Suspension bushings and also drilled and tapped for grease fitting (which I can offer if people want that)

They are coming, I could have posted weeks ago, I had it on my truck for the 1300 mile round trip to Overland Expo, and I loved the handling and ride on the highway.

November it will be revealed, plus going to be giving 1 or 2 away on Instagram. A lot of work to get them cut, welded, cleaned and zinc-nickel plated.

@Regcab05 Bolt in cross tube is going to be optional. But you cannot have your spare tire in factory location to use it. But I think it will be useful to mount water tanks and air compressors on.

 

So my question is again, what is wrong with my setup that is causing the leaf to flatten/have so much negative travel?

Do any of the spring mfgs say, "Space you bumps so it won't go negative"? I doubt it, they are all designed to go negative, that is just a fact of the spring over on The 2nd and 3rd gens. Try it on your new springs Joe, same thing.

My opinion is the All Pro springs are compromised quality, that is based on my customers reports and a reliable source of further information.
ALL PRO are imported from China.
Also, every spring mfg can and has had failures, its part of modding trucks, so people should expect it, even the stock Toyota springs were breaking on stock commuter trucks!

 

Sorry if I came across that way, I wasn't being hostile, just matter of fact, because I don't think you were ready to understand. Its a huge assumption on here that negative is so bad, I'm just stating fact that it is unavoidable on spring over Tacomas unless they space the bumps.

 

I'd rather have the combination of as much experience as possible to figure this shit out. I appreciate all input.

 

Not to make this about leaf complaints, but I'm disappointed with my expos. High clearance rear with swingout, full spare, and aluminum bedrack and my leafs are almost flat at ride height. That is with stock suspension except the leaf pack and ubolt flip kit. I do not have the expo 2.0, so maybe the newer packs are better quality. Just my experience.

I don't like pointing out negative aspects of other suppliers, but All Pro made their own bed, how do they build springs so affordably, I think we all know.

So the situation is @Thyces broke a brand new spring at a point of high stress at U-bolt. My opinion is it would have broken regardless of stock hanger or shackle flip. I do acknowledge the shackle flip puts some extra force on the springs and if you don't space the bumps it causes more negative arch.

 

I'll be moving this to its own thread very soon, I would still like some input from somebody with a 5-inch shackle and the All-Pro expos.

 

That's what I mean.... I'm leaning to a shitty leaf + stress from the flip as the culprit. I hope this doesn't happen again as this was the second 6.5 hour drive to a location to not be able to wheel.

 

I'm thinking now.... This pic is stationary. If on the rocks that bumpstop slipped, it would allow for way too much negative arch.

 

So I'll have to imagine it was that the leafs had a defect which may or may not have been amplified by the flip + longer shackle.

You misunderstood. Blue or black sumo springs. Blue are for Tacoma rated @ 1000lbs at 3" compression. Black are for tundra rated @1500lbs at 3" compression.

Anyone thinking about this flip kit, get it. It's a great product, well built and customer service has been phenomenal. I personally think that the combination of the 5" shackle and the relatively thin nature of the allpro may have been a factor in the leaf snapping.

 

Did it snap when compressed or extended?
