So even with 1.02C-A, the auto trans gets up into 5th gear at the 36-37mph range. Feels boggy when it does that, although its not as bad as stock. Definitely wasn't like that for the first few miles, but now its 120ish miles in. It is a big improvement over stock, but it doesn't need to be in 5th gear at that low of a speed.

Only real solution for that will be to get 4.88 gears. This AT is geared too tall.

Difference is that with the tune a bit of throttle and it’ll drop smoothly down to 3rd if you need to accelerate but agree the tall gears is the main cause of this. Still light years above stock imo and worth every penny

    No thanks.

Yes it is much better than the OEM tune, but IMO it shouldn't be in that high of a gear at that low of a speed. That's like the #1 complaint of these Tacomas, being in too high of a gear and bogging down. I wonder if its the "learning" built into these computers. The transmission is controlled electronically, so its not like it HAS to be in 5th gear at 36 mph.

One would think! I don’t really feel it bogging so far though TBH, mine seems to downshift before a boggy feeling happens but I agree it rarely makes sense to be in overdrive at 36mph!

Curious what your reasoning is about this.

Here is my reasoning. With 4.88 final drive, 1st, 5th and 6th are still taller than the stock manual transmission.

Yes, 2nd, 3rd and 4th are shorter than the manual, but this truck makes its power higher in the power band than the 2nd gen Tacoma. We want higher revs while accelerating on the 3rd Gen and yet we still get taller 5th and 6th for cruising.

Seems like a win win. Only downside and it’s a big one: price. Gears and install running about $2k. That’s the only reason I haven’t done it yet.

FYI: I got this information from this post.

Cost is the big one. You’ll never see a penny of that 2k back, it’s purely for driving enhancement. I personally would love to pull the trigger on 4.88s, but haven’t decided how long I’ll be keeping the truck. OVTune is a nice middle ground in terms of price and improvement. Hence why this thread has 400 replies and the 4.88 thread has...?

No argument here. I’ll definitely be getting the OVTune first. But hope to be able to re-gear after my warranty up.

Make sure to email Matt so he can check on if he may have missed it. Aside from that, I believe Matt is dependent on another hardware/software company to provide the actual registration keys, so the delay could be out of Matt's hands. I was lucky, in that it only took me 34 hours after emailing the serial number to receive the registration key.

I hope it's soon as I would like to get the license, read the stock file and to send it in and get the tune back and installed before Mat leaves for a few days...
Just in case there is an issue..
That and I'm excited to join the club.

The mpg for my trip to work this morning was 26.4 according to the indicator on the truck. The outside temperature was 70 degrees. 31.5 mile trip, mostly 68mph and all in "D" with ECT off. The highest I've ever seen for that same trip pre-tune was 24.3, with ECT on. This morning when I looked at the instantaneous mpg reported by the truck, the bargraph was pegged at 30. Is it hurting anything to be burning more air than fuel?

doubt it... part of why these trucks bogged so much was being too rich. I could see this in my live lamda readings where at closed loop it would still be sitting around .98 lambda. With the tune closed loop sits right at 1.00 where it should be, bit higher on acceleration, lower when taking the foot off as it should be. In general, I'd like to UNDERSTAND why they consciously had these running so rich to ensure there is no damage (i.e. high compression concerns or otherwise) but it was indeed smothering the engine esp. in high load situations and it isn't anymore w/ the tune... FWIW

Hey Brandon, How would you compare 1.01b to the latest? I am still on 101.b - never tried 1.02b due to mixed reviews. I am super happy with 1.01b. and my trans is well behaved since getting the latest TSB done about a month ago. I agree, it totally transforms the truck. It's like it shed 1000 lbs. I have not had a chance to update yet.
