A co-worker sent this to me this week. It is a family sedan and is quite heavy...

 

Get's about the same as a tank in our trucks on a charge doesn't it? Plus, in a pinch you could pull up to just about any house and plug it in for a (slow) recharge. Ya don't even need a gas station. I get that you're not taking a trip to say... MT from WA, but it's good for more than "in the city" I think.

 

Range anxiety is certainly an issue for some. Like with anything, we learn to adjust that with experience.

The current 'big battery' on the P100D model has a range of ~315 miles. This number keeps going up. The new models also have an improved charging capacity, at the Tesla supercharging stations. A full charge is possible from almost empty to full in 30 minutes. Pretty amazing when you think about it.

For comparison, this one, with its 85 Kwh battery can charge at my house at a rate of 30 miles of range in an hour. That is using a 50 amp/240 volt AC circuit. So to full (~265 miles) is a little over 8 hours.

 

Actually, this is one of the early models so it is eligible for free charges from Tesla's supercharger system so you can drive across the country if you want.

What is the cost to use the charging stations?

 

Not just EV. We will see electric, driverless vehicles become the norm.

 

Free. No charge to use. Up until January 2017 is was included as a feature of all Model Ss. I don't really know the actual cost of using them now but as I mentioned, it is free for the car I have.

FWIW, I've been using ~10 kilowatts so far each day for my commute (~40 miles round trip). My electric company charges me 10 to 12 cents per kilowatt depending on how much I use in a month (tier pricing).

And even vehicles will never replace gas until hydrogen fuel cells take over as far as I care. They won't work in places like Wyoming or montana or Idaho really

 

Totally agree that the interaction (and complication of that) are going to be the hard part. But the rest of our lifetime in tech-time is an eternity (no iPhone 10 years ago), so I'm relatively certain, as much as I love driving, that it'll happen. It won't be exclusive (I hope), but it'll be mainstream.

Better battery and charging tech might change that. Imagine a thousand mile range with a short charge. And with autonomous, two cars could "meet to transfer passengers" or some such thing to extend range/decrease downtime even more.

Again, there will still be need for human-driven (all the stuff we do is a great example), but the transition will happen.

 

It'll takes forever for that to happen out here. Think of all the ranches for instance. Hell going to get groceries takes an hour here of driving alone.

Hydrogen would solve all that. Be just like a gas station. Won't need bateries as battery tech isn't really advancing well enough. Hydrogen would just replace gas very easily with the rest of the world. Just need a better way of creating hydrogen.

 

Think of all the lost jobs you just me tips replaced by automated vehicles. Be something to tackle in itself.

What infrastructure? Is there some? Sure. Enough? Fuck no. Plus the infrastructure is already there for hydrogen. Just takes redoing the gas pumps to hydrogen. It would be the simplest switch for people as well.

I think they put too much of their chips on battery powered cars. Doesn't help the fact most of our electricity is still coal and nuclear produced. And they have been try to shutdown coal for years. I wish they had gone for hydrogen. Would have been more beneficial all around. Too bad Elliot didn't pursue that more

 

Oil companies own most of the patents and rights to it anyway. They make money either way

 

And that right there is why it never took off in the first place.

Not yet. He said he was going to have money soon and was interested. So we will see what that means. I have got my use out of it so it's time to pass it on. Probably hit 300,000 this week so once that happens I'm cool with it going

 

The self driving cars from Waymo and Uber come through my new neighborhood all the time. Kinda neat watching them navigate and adjust through suburban territory. They're all over down here, go a block or two and you see one. Asked them what they were doing with no one in them, they're just babysitting and testing routes, very cool stuff.

 

Ahh gotcha. Well I have a dude looking for one from our church. Didn't know it had 300k on it almost! Haha! That's sweet
