The Beer Nerd - what are you drinking / brewing thread

Nice! I'm a big fan of cashews, peanuts, almonds, etc, but kinda got the feeling that I wasn't supposed to have anything with a craft beer. Kinda felt like it would "ruin" the flavor of the beer, but figured I'd ask the experts here for some input.

 

If you're eating something that ruins the flavor, I'd skip it.

Otherwise munch on! IMO.

 

It's just like wine. You can pair more foods with beer than you can wine. A local brewery does a monthly beer and cheese pairing, beer and chocolate pairing, uhhh and I think one more. Others also do like 3/4 course dinners with a beer pairing for each course.

My favorite beer munchie would probably have to be those mustard and onion pretzels or those little sourdough nib things

 

In your opinion/expertise, what types of foods would ruin the flavor?! Actually, more like what types of snacks... that's what I would be munching on more while enjoying a nice craft beer. Not much of a beer drinker while eating lunch/dinner. And usually if I'm at a BBQ, and there's burgers, etc, I drink something I don't really "care about" as much as I do about craft beer now, like a Corona or something like that.

 

Interesting... Hopefully the local brewery will do something like that when they finally open up.

 

Oof. I dunno. There is a beer for almost every food.

It'd be more like a wrong pairing for example a super hoppy bitter IPA and apple pie or something like that.

Apple pie and a nice oatmeal stout or RIS on the other hand, mmmm.

 

Gotcha... I think. Gotta start trying to mix it up then.

But snacks, like nuts, are OK, right?!

There is???!!!! I have to find some of those then.

A buddy of mine that is also into craft beer just gave me a new "lead" on Saturday night, about another local store that has a bunch of single bottles, and thinks has a bigger selection than a bunch of places around here. I have to make a stop and see what they have.

Will do next time. I was playing catch with the dog when I opened this one, so I just drank it from the can.

 

Some breweries will put food pairings on their website. They may refer to meals, but you can start to get an idea of what pairs well, like salty, sweet, spicy, etc. If I'm drinking with a meal, I usually try to drink at least part of the beer before eating anything and then see how adding food changes the flavor of the beer.

Southern Tier is one of the breweries that comes to mind that lists food pairings with beers on it's website. They have a lot of specialty flavored beers, so those might not be helpful, but they have a few regular styled beers that you could check out - porter, ipa, pilsner.
